James:

I woke up from the most peaceful sleep I've had in months.

I look down to see Ava sleeping soundly in my arms. She's so gorgeous and I can't help but stare at her for a couple minutes. Then, I pick her up gently and put her in my bed. I leave some pain pills and water on the night stand and make my way to work and start the day.

Once in the car, I drive to the hospital and park in my spot, I got there early so I dial the number of Jonathan, a cop who became my friend after I stitched him up from a bullet graze.

"Jonathan, hey, how's the scar doing?"

"James! Dude, this shit gets me all the ass when I show them that I survived a bullet."

I roll my eyes, "A bullet graze you idiot"

"Tomato, tomahto"

"Whatever, hey man I need a favor." My voice suddenly getting serious.

"Whoa, okay from your tone, it's serious, your ass better not be in any fucking law trouble. I don't have time to bail your ass out."

"Jonathan"

"Okay, okay what's up?"

"I have a friend who..." I sniff and take a deep breath, "who was assaulted last night behind Pete's, she was in bad shape and didn't want to get taken to the hospital,  I'm pretty sure because of medical insurance so I took her to my house but I need you to help me find out who did it."

"Fuck, worse than bailing you out, you want me to investigate when your friend didn't press charges and worse, you took her to YOUR house."

"Look, I know its bad, but she's homeless and has no ID on her, you know people don't care if it's a nobody against someone with power, she said he had an expensive suit on and looked important, it's her words against this jackasses," I grind my teeth and feel my anger start to seep through as I speak.

Truth is truth, and these bastards get away with a lot if they have the money, especially against a homeless person. We needed solid proof to take this dude down or else, Ava would deal with this pain while he was out free, living his life.

Jonathan was silent on the other end, "you know its the fucking truth Jonathan. You've seen it yourself haven't you? So help me."

I hear him sigh defeat, "what do you want me to do?"

"Just look at the cameras, I know there HAS to be at least one that catches the scene or at least enough to see who did this."

"Alright, I can do that. But if we find something, my hands are tied unless she presses charges. I'm sticking my neck on the line for you James, this could get me fired for investigating without probable cause."

"She'll press charges and I'll be a witness, at least my backing as a doctor and my fathers name will get us somewhere."

"Alright, but make sure you documented her injuries as well as pictures if you can."

"You got it, thanks Jonathan really"

"Yeah, yeah you owe me" He hangs up as I smile and lean my head on the wheel.

A few moments later, I was back in the pace of it all, working in the emergency room again but today seemed to be harder than usual because it was flu season so we were packed. I've never heard so much coughing and runny noses in my life.

I was exhausted.

I walk into the lunch room and sit in an empty table to eat some sad salad and apple slices. I see Jackie spot me and she sits next to me while digging in her lunch bag from home,
