I had tracked her down. It had taken longer than I thought it would, but Adelaide couldn't hide from me any more than she could keep her secret in check. She had changed her hair color, but even from a distance, I could still tell it was her by the way she carried herself. She had a bounce in her step that could transfer into a sprint at any moment. Adelaide was always ready to run and always wore her gloves. It was a fruitless move. The gloves wouldn't protect anyone. The girl was a walking powderkeg that needed to be controlled.
I stood in the shadows, watching her talk to a boy with purple hair. They walked through Pike Place Market together, gesturing at the people around them. Adelaide was smiling more than I had seen her do in years. You know better than to try and make friends Adelaide. You know how terribly it will end for you. And yet, she still tries, leaving me to fix her problems.
I adjusted my sunglasses and kept my distance. It wasn't time to make my move yet. First I needed to find out who this boy was, and why Adelaide has grown so fond of him.
