Every log had to be set in the right place, and so did every nail. If not, this house would come crumbling down. I climbed up the wall and hammered in another nail. Then I jumped back down onto the sand to inspect my work. It looked as good as my little forest cabin did. Lapis had loved that place. I looked behind myself to see her there, looking on curiously and cradling her stomach.

"Hey, honey," I said. "Come to check it out?"

"You never told me what you're building," Lapis replied.

"A home," I said. "A home for you and I and our family."

I hammered in another nail. I had to do this perfectly. I would not let this house fall down, and I would not let my family down either.
