I awoke to the blinding sunlight.
It had been a while since I had got a decent night's sleep.
But now, everything was almost...okay.
Dad was dead, Five came back.
Five still...liked me?
I didn't even know, but I knew I was the closest to feeling normal that I had been for 17 years.
I crawled out of bed and washed my face in Vanya's bathroom.
I brushed my hair with her hairbrush as well but I didn't think she would mind.
I looked at my reflection in the mirror.
I still looked ill but at least I was smiling.
I walked out of Vanya's room.
"Five?" I called.
"Five?" My voice faltered, he wasn't there.
I felt a pang of anger in my chest but I dismissed it.
Five wouldn't just leave.
We were friends now...right?
I shook my head and smiled, sitting down on the sofa.
But then I realised that Five was gone. I panicked.
I ran into Vanya's room, shaking her awake.
"Five's gone!" I told her. "I don't know where but it can't be good, he wouldn't just leave. Maybe he's in trouble, maybe he's been kidnapped or sent back to the apocalypse or killed, what if we never see him again..."
Vanya sat up, stopping my rambling.
"Breathe." She said, patting me on the back.
I followed her into the living room and she looked around.
'Oh shit." She said.
*****
"FIVE?" I shouted, running into the house.
"Five?" I called.
"Alright, calm down. You'll wake the others." Vanya shushed me.
"But.." I tried to speak.
"Let's check his room." She said, grasping my wrist and pulling me along.
I grumbled.
Five was standing by his window, looking out.
"Oh, thank god." Vanya breathed. "I was worried sick about you."
I ran up to Five and hugged him, almost knocking him over.
"Geez, calm down." He said, laughing.
I frowned, angry and broke away.
"I thought you'd been kidnapped. Or worse!" I cried out.
"I'm sorry for scaring you Cali." He said sincerely, pulling me into a hug.
"Okay." I said, hugging him tightly back. At least he was safe.
He looked up at Vanya, still hugging me.
"Sorry I left without saying goodbye." He said.
"No, look, I'm the one that should be sorry. Yeah, I was dismissive, and I— I guess I didn't know how to process what you were saying."
He broke away from me and walked forward.
I sprung onto his bed and lay on my stomach, watching them.
"And I still can't, to be honest." Vanya finished.
"Maybe you were right to be dismissive." Five said. He scoffed slightly. "Maybe it wasn't real after all."
He turned away but I could see in his eyes that he didn't believe it.
"It felt real. Well, like you said, the old man did say time travel could contaminate the mind." He walked back and sighed.
"Then maybe I'm not the right person for you to be talking to." Vanya said. "Look, I used to see someone."
We both stared at her.
Whoa! Vanya had a boyfriend?
"A therapist. I could give you her information."
Oh.
"Thanks, but..." He turned to his bed and smiled at me.
"I think I'm just gonna got some rest. It's been a long time since I've had a good sleep." He said.
Vanya sighed, "Okay." She turned and left the room.
I jumped off Five's bed.
"You want me to stay?" I asked, gingerly.
He smiled.
"Nah, you go do something. Wolf-out, I'll catch up with you later, yeah?" He said.
I smiled, "Yeah, of course!"
I walked to my bedroom.
But something wasn't right, I could feel it.
