How the Axe Falls by FarrellKeeling

What do you get when you mix a young hero thirsting for revenge, a despicable villain, unexpected adventure, looming castles, obnoxious villagers, a mysterious ship with a questionable crew and a pinch of forbidden magic, all set in a dark fantasy world? Yes, exactly: How the Axe Falls. Buckle up for an exciting ride with twists and turns and a host of unique characters to accompany you along the way.

This story is only into its eighth chapter and I assume that there is still a lot more to be told, but I've found this to be such a compelling start that I wanted to give it a spot in my review book.

⚔️ What is this story about?

Talon Carth isn't your regular ten year old. From the moment we step into the tale and join his path, he is driven by one thing: revenge. Revenge for the bloody executions of his father, his sister and his mother, all accused of possessing magic, something that has been outlawed by the king. The orphaned boy is now in his uncle's care, who bestows upon Talon a mysterious cloak, an heirloom of his late mother.

Dead set on killing the Viscount, whom he deems responsible for the loss of his family, Talon sets out with nothing more than his uncle's knife tucked into his boot, and the will to taste blood in his heart, only to realise that even the best laid out plans can be flawed. Things come thick and fast, and suddenly Talon finds himself aboard a mysterious ship, ready to head out on whatever adventure life has in store for him.

⚔️ Why do I like this book?

Right from the beginning the book makes a strong point of cutting right to the action. No introduction, no long descriptions, we are simply thrown straight into the scene of a gruesome execution that makes it clear that this world is mercilessly ruled by those who are in power.

"With a shrug, the headsman heaved the axe with both hands above his head and brought it down for a third time against the bloody mess of bone and sinew." (Chapter 1)

"There were only two types of people in this world: the tools and those that wielded them - how the axe falls, so the saying in Edge Cliff went." (Chapter 1)

Beautiful imagery can be found along the way, despite the rather gruesome premise of this story.

"The golden hawk of Clovaine soared above a field of blue and red, rippling violently, as if the wind knew it didn't belong there." (Chapter 2)

"Blotches of crimson streaked across the sky as the sun sunk below the pink waters beyond the cliffs with such haste, as if it could sense the coming bloodshed." (Chapter 5)

Besides all the grimness there's also a good amount of humour and a casually mentioned incident with a flaming cow spurned a highly entertaining conversation in the comments section.

"The Viscount sighed pejoratively. At the very least he had the executions to entertain him, and he'd already caught that girl who had set one of the peasant's cattle on fire." (Chapter 3)

⚔️ Where will the journey go?

I'm not sure what the author has in mind for Talon and I do not want to spoil too much of the plot up to now, just in case there are some new readers, who want to discover this story on their own. Whoever is looking for an entertaining new read with adventure, sword fighting, intrigue and a young and determined hero, would do well to check out this book.
