Atheist's Angel by Velfman

This story is a Paranormal Romance written for the ONC and made it onto the shortlist, very well deserved in my opinion, because it has been among my personal favourites.  It follows the angel Tararus and the human Gabriela on a dangerous quest that is not quite what it seems.

⭐️ What makes this story unique?

Atheist's Angel started out as a roleplay with a not so nice angel, a very evil god and a quirky human. I have honestly never read anything like it before, but gorgeous descriptions and vivid dialogues make the world as well as the characters come alive.

I couldn't help but fall in love with the dark angel Tararus, who thinks himself not worthy of Gabriela's feelings, and tries everything to keep her from getting tangled in his rather complicated eternal life. To no avail, Gabriela is as stubborn as they come, and so they both embark on a dangerous mission, hoping to succeed against all odds. But the master of evilness, dark God Synn has others plans. He pulls the strings and before Tar and Gab realise it, they are trapped in his web of gruesome machinations.

⭐️ Those favourite bits

I decided to include here only excerpts from the early chapters, so as to avoid spoilers. This one is from Chapter Two - Sailor, when Gabriela rescues Tararus, who washed up on the beach near her home.

Humour was her first line of defence. Next, came babbling, then sarcasm. Given the circumstances, she expected to rip through all of those stages, and then go into a full tantrum, before a slight nervous breakdown.

And this is from Chapter Three - Good Intentions, showing us just how high an opinion an angel like Tararus has of humans:

Humans were not bad, there were worse mortal races out there. They were just, awkward, difficult to comprehend, fragile and short-lived. So, rather useless. A smirk tugged at his lips as he heard Gabriela stomp up the steps behind him.

And then shortly after, in the same chapter, begins the development of an irresistible chemistry between Gab and Tar. Watch and enjoy:

"There are worse things than being resuscitated by you. I think you enjoyed it." He let his tone deepen, but the warmth of his amusement bled through.

She paused and looked over her shoulder, aiming a penetrating glare in his direction. "If you can banter like that, you must be on the road to recovery," she said with a curt sniff and opened the door to the back of the house. "Of course, I enjoyed it. Cold salty lips, sand, fear of your imminent death. What's not to love?"

⭐️ And the best?

Since the ending left us poor readers honestly in a state of shock, I'm very happy that there is a sequel in the works titled Shadow's Checkmate and I just couldn't resist posting the cover here. I mean, just look at Synn's smug face. This smirk promises a lot of troubles and I'm looking forward to every single one of them. Author's Notes: I hope you've enjoyed this review of a story that has captured my heart with its quirky mortal and perhaps not so evil angel, but definitely very nasty God Synn.

Stay tuned for the next review^^!
