CHAPTER ONE
Months ago...
"ARE you sure about this?" Lisa asked Jennie nonchalantly, she didn't want her best friend to notice her qualms about what she had just told her.
They were on the balcony of her room, sitted on the bench while looking up at the sky. It was just hours ago when Jennie barged into her house uninvited, she told her she couldn't wait until tomorrow to tell her something important, little did she know that what Jennie would tell her, would also break her heart.
"About marrying Kai? Why wouldn't I be?" Jennie answered, happiness evident in her voice. "I wouldn't have said yes if I wasn't sure about this."
Lisa faked a smile. She should be happy for her best friend... but she's not. And when Jennie raised her left hand and stared at her ring finger, the diamond ring that she was wearing shone, and all Lisa could do was look away.
"Lisa."
"Hmm?"
"Can you be my maid of honor?" she knew this would come, who else would Jennie ask to be her maid of honor? But she had no time to prepare herself for this pain, she didn't know what to answer, when honestly, she didn't want to answer her at all. "Lisa?"
"I-ah I'm not sure," was her only reply.
"What?" Jennie looked at her with disbelief. "What do you mean you're not sure?"
"Jennie, you guys have only been dating for three months and you will already marry him?" She looked at Jennie and saw how she shook her head.
"Okay, I get it. I know you haven't had the time to fully get to know Kai and you've only seen him like five times? But when we're hanging out with friends I always ask you to come with us so that you could finally get to know him better, but you would always decline. I know you don't like him for me---"
"How could you say that?"
"Because!" Jennie sighed. "What other reasons would you have?"
She stared at Jennie, for a moment she wanted to tell her the real reason why she didn't want to be her maid of honor or tell her she doesn't want to attend her wedding. Heck! If it's about being honest, she doesn't want to be there if it's not her who is going to marry Jennie. But instead of saying all those things, she just decided to keep her mouth shut and reminded herself that it wouldn't do good anyway, it wouldn't change a thing, Jennie would still marry Kai, not her.
She heaved a deep sigh. "I already told you why, you've only known him for months, can't you at least rethink about your decisions just to make sure you're not jumping into things?"
"I am not. Trust me," Jennie took her hand and lightly squeezed it, she smiled at her with assurance in her gaze. "Aren't you happy for me?"
"I'm happy when you're happy. So if this..." she took Jennie's left hand and played with the engagement ring on her finger. "...makes you happy, if he makes you happy then what else could I do or say? What kind of awful best friend am I if I wouldn't be happy for you?" she smiled a genuine one when she heard her giggle. "Your happiness is all that matters to me. I hope you know that."
"Aww Lisa, don't make me cry right now, it's not yet my wedding day," Jennie rested her head on her shoulder and hugged her torso. "You know I feel the same way about you, your happiness matters to me. And one of the reason why I am here is because I wanted you to be the first person to know about this, you are that important to me Lisa."
"Thank you for letting me be the first one to know about this, and I'm sorry if you felt like I don't like Kai for you, it's just that I am protective of you because you are my best friend and I... I-I hope you understand I only want what's best for you."
"I know," Jennie then rested her chin on her shoulder and looked at her, their eyes met and she didn't look away, she wanted her to see her... to see right through her.
How she wishes her eyes could speak so that they could tell her all the things she has no courage to say. Like how she wanted to kiss her right there, especially when Jennie's face is only a few inches away from her, only she knows how much she'd been dying to feel those lips on her own.
"Lisa."
"Hmm?" she leaned towards her and closed her eyes when their foreheads touched.
"So what do you say?"
"About what?" she asked with a frown on her face, she had almost forgotten what their conversation was about.
"Will you be my maid of honor?" she opened her eyes and saw Jennie having this huge smile on her face, the kind of smile Lisa couldn't say no to. "Please? Do this for me?"
She knows Jennie is unaware of the power she has over her, that even if it means having her heart broken again and again with what's bound to happen, she would still do it for her. She loves her that much, she values her happiness over her own sorrow. And if this is what Jennie wants, even if it kills her, she'd be there for her.
"Okay," she replied and saw how Jennie's eyes widened. "Hey, I said yes, I will be your maid of honor," she snapped her fingers when Jennie was still not moving. "Earth to Jennie!"
"I-I..." Jennie avoided her gaze and laughed. "I thought I still had to convince you again and again until you agree, I just couldn't believe you'd say yes right away."
"Well I already said yes, do you want me to change my mind?"
"No, no," she heard her laugh again and felt how her arms tightened around her torso. "Thank you Lili."
"Anything for you Nini," she replied then kissed her forehead.
