Scientific Makeup:  A basic silicate of iron and aluminum, often withsome magnesium and zinc. Color varies from yellowish brown, reddish tobrownish black, weathering to grey and are somewhat dull inappearance. White streak. Collectors itemsbecause twinned crystals often intergrow at nearly 90 degreeangles, forming a cross. Hardness of 7 - 7 1/2.

Environment:  Occurs with albite, biotitie, andsillimanite in gneiss and schist of regional metamorphicrocks.

Found in: Maine, New Hampshire, Georgia, New Mexico. Switzerland, France, Scotland.

Name: Greek. Derived from the word "stauros", meaning cross.

Magick and Legend: Considered to be arepresentative of all four elements: Air, Fire, Earth andWater. Wearer was said to be able to bend all the elements to their will. Said that the 90 degree crossrepresented the crossing of the spiritual and physicalplanes. Carried as a good luck charm.
