Not broken

Prompt:

Make up a secret code. Begin by writing a few nonsense sentences, like “The raindrops tap out a cry for help” or “The dandelions are saying all at once, ‘You are overwhelmed.’” The formula is easy: come up with a message and assign it to something unlikely. Remember, of course, that inanimate objects can speak and that signs and symbols may be nonverbal.

Once you have a few sentences, select the one that is most intriguing to you and use it to start a poem.

My Poem:

I hear their screams echoing through the bass lines of my heart.

Bouncing, running, screaming through the empty hallways.

Try as I might to trap them in, they don’t seem to want to stay.

The docters do not see this though

all they see is a broken girl.

scars pukering her otherwise smooth skin.

Their words pound against the bindings of my skin.

I try to claw them out only when it gets too painful

the psychologist dont understand that its not death I want

I just want the restless spirts of my past and present to stop yelling

I want sounds of shattered glass to not echo through my soul

and I want the look of disappointment to leave the edges of my memories.

But no. They cant hear the words of my song,

the plea of my soul,

nor the tears of my heart.

They see a sad girl,

a broken girl,

a lost girl.

I am not lost.

I just haven’t found my exit.
