Less Than Her

In the break between classes, you and the trio were walking down the swamped hallways. Out of the corner of your eye, a flash of platinum blond caught your attention. Turning to face your long time crush, your heart sank in your chest and you saw who was clinging to his arm.

Pansy stood with a loopy expression on her face as she sunk her fingers into a death grip on his arm. Draco himself looked rather irritated with the gesture, but was trying to put on a mask of indifference.

Looking away quietly, Harry turned to face you, “Why have you been so sad lately? For the past week all you’ve done is sulk around.”

“Nothing,” you smiled lightly, taking your mind off of the thought.

Unfortunately, you happened to share a table with the blonde boy in your next class. Some situations are just inescapable.

Winding through the hallways, you eventually broke off from the rest of the group as they all ran off to deal with part of their usual shenanigans. Soon you were deep enough into the castle that only a few occasional students could be spotted as you neared your next class.

Sitting down in your cold seat, you couldn’t help but notice your partner had yet to show up. It wasn’t unheard of for Draco to be running late to class, yet something about this situation rubbed you the wrong way. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that Pansy also seemed to be missing at the moment. Ignoring the feeling consuming your stomach, you began to organize supplies and readied the quill and ink.

About twenty minutes into the day’s lecture, Draco busted through the back doors of the class and managed to gather his disheveled self into the seat next to yours. Not a minutes later, Pansy followed suit with a creepily satisfied smirk on her face. You couldn’t help but notice how her eyes landed right on yours for a few seconds before she eventually turned away and took her seat.

Hair amuck and eyes wide, it didn’t take a genius to realize what had happened. Draco had just returned from some sort of crazed situation with Pansy that you dared not think about. Just the mention of such a thing sent chills up your spine.

Turning your eyes down and away, you couldn’t help but feel the familiar sting of tears prickling about at their edges as you fought to keep them contained. At this point, your cheeks had fired up as well. In only a few seconds it all composure was lost.

Raising your hand, you asked to be excused to the bathroom and slipped away out of the deadlock gray stare of your crush’s eyes. Draco had noticed some of your reaction and was quite intrigued as he traced your figure until you disappeared out of the creaking, heavy doors.

Once safe in the hallway, a long exhale left your chest. Staring up at the stone ceiling, a number of questions shot through your head all at once.

Why her? What does she have that I don’t? Why can’t I just be like her? What’s wrong with me? Why is this happening? Maybe he just hates me…

The thread of thought softened as you wandered down to the closest girl’s room, hoping to gain some peace of mind and composure.

After washing your face with a good few rinses, you looked up to face your reflection in the mirror. After the tears that had spilled over on your walk here, it was no surprise you weren’t looking your best. Two sunken eyes and a weary expression was what you were met with.
