"Hey Lucus. Hey Lucus. Hey Lucus. He-"

"Damnit! Who gave this chick so many rubber balls?!" The mysterious boy, who I found out was named Lucus, said.

I had been throwing them at him.

"Swankey's daughter works at a factory. Are you ready to talk to me?"

Most of the others had gone home, except Dave (who I was still mad at), Swankey, and Sheriff Jones, and they fell asleep, so I was extremely bored.

"No. Leave me alone," he replied, rolling over on his bed to glare at me.

"Fine, Mr. Grump. Whatever you say. I was only going to tell you your bed is about to collapse."

"Wha-"

*Thunk* Sure enough, the thin metal bars supporting his small mattress gave way, sending him rolling towards me.

"How did you?" He started, looking between the mattress and me.

"I'm the smartest person you'll ever meet," I gloated.

It was partially true.

"Okay," he decided to test me. "What's the square route of seven thousand, two hundred, sixty two?"

"Not math, you idiot. I'm terrible at booksmarts." I began to reach for the boombox sitting on the floor by the desk as I talked with him. I was on the floor, with my arm through the bars as far as it would go. And I could only barely touch it.

I gave up, and sat up straight, continuing my explanation.

"I can just, sort of... analyze..." I was choosing my words carefully. "situations... and sorta..."

"Oh I get it," he interupted me again. "You're able to see a chain of events and what different things could happen. Does it also work with, say..."

"Things fitting together?" I finished for him. "Yeah. I'm an expert at mechanics and inventing."

He nodded, as he slid to the floor, pressing his face against the bars, as he gracefully slid the boombox towards me.

I smiled his way, silently thanking him as I got to work. This little scheme, I've been planning for months now. I might as well show off in front of the new kid.

I switched the tape to the other side, and hit track four, as well as the repeat button. A soft melody came on, and I slid the boombox between the sleeping forms of Dave, Carl, and Jones.

Lucus just seemed to be watching with amusement.

"So," he continued, obviously curious about something. "Why did you just give them back the keys earlier? Why didn't you break out?"

"Long story," I choked out, as I struggled to push off the bars of the bed with my feet. One successfully came off, so I started on the second.

"We've got time," he pressed.

I stopped what I was doing to look at him.

"You know what? I like you, Lucussss. You've earned my respect," I announced, still keeping my voice low.

"And I assume that's a big thing, Skylarrrr," he mimicked me.

I smiled in return, as I continued to try to kick off the bars that were holding up the flimsy mattress.

"So?" Lucus drawled.

"Oh, right..." I grunted slightly as the second bar came off. I grabbed the two, and handed them to Lucus.
