"Ohmmmmm," I hummed, sitting in the meditation position on my living room floor.
My parents were off drinking at the town bar again, and I was just released from jail this morning. Now, I was simply just trying to think of another illegal thing to do. I figured I'll willingly visit the cops after this next time I get arrested. I still gotta keep my deal with Jones about the food.
Five days ago, on New Year's Day, Luke's dad had bailed him out leaving Swankey and I to tell the rest of the gang that I won our bet. After that, nothing real interesting happened, aside from our usual crazed stunts.
The day after tomorrow, at two, I was supposed to meet Swankey at the park for my doughnuts, so I suppose I have to stay out of jail until then.
"I'mmmm Soooo Boreeedddda."
It was then that I heard a loud, firm knock on the door. One that could only belong to Sherriff Jones.
Yeah. I've had him arrest me at my house numerous times.
So, seeing as I did nothing wrong, or so I think (they might've just found the gators in the school swimming pool), and knowing that I HAD to stay out of jail until I got my hands on my doughnuts, I took off running through the back door.
It didn't take me long to run across the small yard, and jump over the fence, but it took even less time for the police. Thankfully, though, it was only the sherriff and Almond, so the latter 'accidentally' tripped Jones.
That gave me enough time to sprint to the park and hide in the bushes, watching, as the police car slowly drove by.
Once I was sure they couldn't see me, I went to sit at the top of the monkey bars, where I always go.
I just sat there, admiring the sun, as it appeared and disappeared behind the clouds.
"Beautiful day in the small town of Nightshade, Michigan?"
Now that familiar voice, that I thought I would never hear again, made me fall off the monkey bars.
"Not fair, Lucus! I just got done running from Almond and Jones. Now my butt is sore."
"Aww, you want me to rub it for you?"
I just glared at him.
"But, uh... Skylar... I have something I need to tell you."
I stopped brushing off my butt and looked up at him, as he came closer to me.
"What is it? What's wrong?"
"Sky, I don't think they were going to arrest you."
"What are you talking about? Of course they were. No one else would put gators in a swimming pool."
"Wait, that was you? No. It doesn't matter."
Luke then grabbed onto my shoulders and looked me in the eyes.
"Sky, I just saw on the news that your parents are dead. They were driving drunk and-"
"What!?" I squeaked.
I know they were terrible parents, but they were still all I had. I still couldn't help but love them at least a little. I wouldn't wish death upon them. Besides, now it's just official that they're gone. They weren't around much anyway, but still.
"Skylar, listen-"
"When did this happen?" I asked, tears pooling in my eyes.
"Early this morning. Apparently, they went out for another round of shots..."
