Part 37

The classes continued but for the rest of the day, Naina carried around a gloom presuming that she might not even get a chance to participate, leave alone winning the competition. This disturbed Sameer as he knew how competitive Naina was and how much effort, hard work, and perseverance she had put in to get this far with one injured hand. He promised to himself that he would try everything but not let her feel defeated.

She didn't talk much for the rest of the day and although he tried to cheer her up, he didn't overwhelm her coz he knew that she would only be fine when the problem would have a solution. After classes, they were supposed to meet Kumud teacher, especially the girls of the teams, coz in those days it was understood that only girls danced on anything classical or the likes. Boys preferred Bollywood, Disco, Break dance or were getting into the newly-springing styles of The West.

Though Naina was reluctant, he implored her to at least register and talk to Kumud teacher. When she still didn't agree on the presumption that she would make a fool of herself, he used his tried and tested weapon. "Naina, tum seedhe tareeke se Kumud teacher ke paas chal rahi ho ya fir main tumhe godd mein uthake le jaun?"

Assuming that he was only teasing and wouldn't dare to even attempt such a stunt in school, she shook her head. "Nahi Sameer...baaki sab theek hai par yeh nahi kar paungi. Aur tum...tum school mein koi ulti seedhi harkat karne ki himmat bhi nahi karoge".

"Achcha..." he came closer and grinned naughtily in a husky tone.

She blushed and he almost jerked and bent half down in a stance as if he was going to pick her up right there in the corridor with several onlookers.

As a reflex, Naina jerked two steps back, and asked with eyes rounded in horror, "kya kar rahe ho Sameer?"

"Miss Naina Agrawal, Sameer Maheshwari ko koi challenge kare aur woh use pura na kare...aisa toh ho nahi sakta. Itna toh tum mujhe jaan hi gayi hogi!" He said the last line with cocked brows in self-obsessed attitude. Then continued in a serious tone, "aur jahan baat tumse judi ho Naina, toh main kuch bhi kar sakta hoon. Par bina lade kabhi tumhe na hi haarne dunga aur na hi kabhi samjhauta karne dunga". He declared.

Seeing that his words had the desired effect as she pursed her lips and resigned to his indignation, he urged. "Fir chale?"

She only nodded and they walked to the staff room where some other girls had also gathered, including Kamiya, who was a Kathak dancer, learning since the age of 7. However, none of the guys of the teams were around, and Sameer was the only guy accompanying his partner.

Naina was apprehensive and her shaky confidence wavered further when Kumud teacher asked the same question. "Naina, tum bhi hissa logi?"

"Ji ma'am".

"Par dance karne ke liye haath pair, salamat chahiye warna bhaav bhangimaaein kaise darshaogi? Patti bandhe haath se tum dance kaise karogi?"

"Tum nahi...hum madam? Naina aur main saath dance karenge!" Sameer spoke up even before Naina could think of an argument in her favor.

All the girls and even Kumud teacher were shell shocked. "Sameer, yeh kya bol rahe ho? Tum dance kaise kar sakte ho?"

"Hmmm...waise hi jaise ladkiyan karti hai...hmmm haath pair se...hmmm bhaav...bhang..." Sameer stated the obvious fluidly as it was supposed to be common knowledge, but stuttered on the last word. "bhangimaaein", Naina supplied. And he continued defending with his logic, "haan...wahi...jaise sab karenge".
