5 river baths, 7 wild geese meals and 2 barely fruitful scavenging detours, Cain and I finally made it to Kansas, the welcome home sign greeted us and our weary bones.
A somber atmosphere full of contemplative melancholy had followed as Cain and I trudged our way towards Kansas.
The scene we had witnessed of the human women exchange with The Outsiders had haunted both of us.
I thought of Xui the whole time. I was devastated at the thought that he had anything to do with it. but then rational thought argued how could he not? He was after all one of them. It was foolish to think he had remembered me, let alone cared enough to not be a part of whatever the Outsiders were doing. Just because I was kind to him once upon a time didn't mean he would forever be indebted to me. Especially where his own people were concerned
I tried miserably not to think too much on it, but somehow it kept popping up in my wayward thoughts. I just truly wanted to find Cain's brother so we could rescue my sister and I could go back to the simplicity of hunting, surviving and caring for my family
I didn't want to know about the human woman, the truth of the facilities or what Xui and his people were truly doing
I wanted the life I had before all this
Simple.
Easy.
"I think we should check all of our old hangout spots" Cain said capturing my attention
"Ok" I answered distractedly
"Do you think he would still go there?"
He shrugged
"I'm not sure but its all I got, I don't know where else to check"
I nodded. that was another issue altogether. we had not idea where Cain's brother, Julius could be. If he was even still alive
We stopped for a short water break and continued on.
After a 15 minute walk in a once beautiful middle class neighborhood, Cain stopped at an abandoned playground.
