LEENA POV

The days blured together one after the other. A repetitive  routine of eating, sleeping and walking. I had no idea how long it had been since we had left the school. But we had just crossed into Iowa's border.

Mere minutes into the expedition we had all learned that Xui and his friends were slave drivers.

They seemed to not understand nor care that we humans did not possess equal stamina or athleticism. We struggled to keep up and had to stop often from exhaustion.

Lokkar frequently grew frustrated with us, but out of respect for his prince refrained from grumbling about it. His glares however said more than enough

there was still strained tension within the group and I just knew eventually it would implode. The tenuous peace could not hold forever

Me and Xui shared knowing looks every time a snarky comment was made or a rude insult was spat

It was a particularly cooler day than usual when the dam finally broke. We had been walking all day. the temp had become barely tolerable as the sun made its descent. I shivered more than once but was determined  to ignore it.

The truth was, the further north we went the more chiller the temp would become. Winter was on the way and Minnesota wasn't know for its mild winters. Us humans were poorly dressed in rags as it was.

Poor sarah was shivering so badly her teeth chattered. It was like a disturbing song how badly it rattled in a continuous rhythm.

"STOP!" someone shouted startling the silence through the peaceful forest. A few birds fled into the sky with the noise

I turned toward the voice, annoyance on my face and fire in my gaze

Of course it had to be the princess Tara. She  was working my nerves the worst, since we began this journey

"What is the problem Tara?" I asked my tone unconvincingly pleasant

"I cant anymore! we need rest and  some decent clothing, this unbearable its freezing!"

She was exaggerating a little but I understood her concerns by the time we reach Minnesota these clothes would not do

Xui looked at me as Lokkar snarled at her until he spied Sara shivering violently

"My apologizes we did not realize that humans couldn't withstand these temperatures. What can we do?" Xui asked  sincerely as he walked toward me

I sighed.

"We need to scavenge for warmer clothing" I grumbled at the idea

I had scavenged for years. I knew it was a hassle even if necessary.

Having Xui would definitely make it much safer but the issues was finding fruitful things. Most places had been picked over, many times

"That will only slow us down" Lokkar growled

"Yes but we will  freeze without them. It will only grow colder the farther we travel". I explained

Xui nodded and turned to his friends

 "Hunt"

One word and they scattered to obey.  I wondered how it felt to have that kind of devotion and loyalty

It was not oppressive like many monarchs from earth history.

 No.

it was clear, it was respect and allegiance. the way it should be for a people to follow its monarchy
