“What is it, Piper?” Annabeth asked gently. She leaned forward and watched me. I struggled to sit up.

When I finally managed to prop myself up, it was so painful I nearly passed out. As I held in a scream, Annabeth’s face tightened. “Should I get help?” she asked. She looked back at the staircase that led on deck. Others would fuss over me.

“No, I’m fine,” I muttered. “Listen, Reyna and I made a truce…”

“I think I remember.” Annabeth nodded. “You two made a truce. To save Jason, am I right?”

I winced, remembering those painful days when I thought Jason was truly evil. And even before that, I thought he didn’t want me. My eyes pricked with tears. “Yeah, that’s right.” I nodded. “Well, while battling the manticore, I got really hurt. Like really, really hurt.”

“I know.” Annabeth’s eyes softened. “There was a while where we thought you weren’t going to make it through. Those were rough times.” She had dark bags under her eyes.

“Well, Jason had an idea,” I continued. “He was going to blast our way through. Reyna and I hid under a cliff overhang. When the roof blasted through, the overhang began to collapse. Reyna could have left me, but she didn’t. She yanked me to safety. She also wrapped parts of her cloak around my wounds.”

“She saved your life,” Annabeth said quietly. “Your knee was infected. You tore a ligament and a few of your muscles were ripped to shreds. You lost a ton of blood from the wound in your stomach. Jason even donated blood.”

My heart felt like it was being yanked in half. Jason donated blood? He was a reason I was alive. He had carried me around Kansas for hours for crying out loud!

“Do you think she was sincere about those things?” I questioned. “Or was she really doing it to look good in front of Jason?”

Annabeth’s eyes were a million miles away. “Piper,” she said absently, “tell me what’s wrong right now.”

And everything spilled out. I admitted I was scared that Reyna would take Jason. She had been the hero two days ago while I made a stupid mistake and nearly gotten myself killed. Every word came out was painful. While Annabeth was a good listener, she couldn’t help but to make faces at what I said. That made my voice tremble and made me feel self-conscious.

When I was done and realized I had confided all my darkest secrets about Jason and Reyna, Annabeth touched my hand. Her eyes were sparkling with tears and also a bit of relief.

“Well, I can see you really care for him,” she said. “Piper, it’s okay.”

“No, it’s not,” I blurted out. “Reyna’s here, Jason must still like her, and I can’t go be with him while I’m in here.”

Again Annabeth touched my hand. “Can I tell you something?”

“Sure.” I chomped down hard on my lip until I tasted blood. I chastened myself because I knew after all the blood I lost two days ago I shouldn’t have been losing blood now.

“Well, it was yesterday,” she began. “I walked in here to check on you. Jason was next to you, of course. He didn’t leave your side once. So I told him to go upstairs to get some rest. You know what he said next?”

“What?” I mumbled.

“He said he wasn’t leaving your side because if anything were to happen, he would blame it on himself. I asked him again why he would blame himself. He said because he really loved you. Piper, he said he loved you.”

My mind went whirling. Suddenly I wasn’t there anymore. I was sailing through the air, screaming and laughing. It was mental, of course.

“Piper, Piper, still with me?” Annabeth asked, snapping her fingers in my face. “Do I need to get help for you?”

“No,” I told Annabeth. “It’s just a little overwhelming, that’s all.”

She smiled. “I’m guessing in a good way.” She squeezes my hand in a comforting friend way. “I’ve got to go. I promised Percy I would tell him Greek myths.” She sent me an apologetic smile. “Hope you can manage by yourself.”

“I can,” I told her. As I heard her footsteps clatter gracefully up the stairs, I curled up into a ball, being careful of all my wounds.

I must have dozed off, because I awoke when the room was dim with weak light and I heard footsteps coming down from on deck.

It was Jason. He flicked on the light. I couldn’t move, still numb with horrible pain. Spots danced into my vision.

“Hey, Pipes, you still up?” he asked gently, sitting down next to me. He took my hand. I squeezed his fingers.

“I just woke up,” I said groggily. “Thanks for waking me. I’ve wanted to see your face.” Probably high off of the pain medication, my hand reached up and touched his face. “Did you get any rest while you were away?”

“I did sleep for a few,” he admitted. “It was nice getting some rest, but its better seeing your eyes open.”

My lips curled up into a smile. “It’s good to be awake.” As I watched out intertwined hands just lay on my bed, I said, “So, did you tell the truth to Annabeth?”

He glanced up, looking confused. “What?” he asked.

My eyes glanced once more at my hand in his. “Do you really love me, Jason? Or do you want Reyna?”

He put his hand under my chin and tilted my head up so I was looking at him. “I was being truthful,” he said, his voice soft. “Why would I lie to you, Piper?”

“I have my worries.”

He gave a smile that made the scar on his lip just about disappear. It just made his face so imperfect that it was perfect. “Don’t worry any more. When you close your eyes, I’ll be here.”

“Kay,” I whispered, letting my eyelids close.

The last thing I felt were his lips pressing against mine, almost as if he was telling me goodnight. Or if he was whispering those impossible words I love you. I would have loved for him to just say bluntly, “I love you, Piper.” But I knew he did, so I could wait.

And then the cold hands pulled me under.
