I wanted to get out of the reading.
I wanted to know Wylan's secrets.
I wanted to know someone who hated Calla as much as I did.
Wylan stormed out of the room with a rather disappointing slam of the door and I saw my chance to accomplish all three of these tasks.
Plus, everyone's face as I walked outside to comfort the ginger impoved this pretty terrible day greatly.
I stormed out of the house with a much better door slam than Wylan's. I walked out to find him agresivily kicking the street sign that read Fox Way.
"Stupid!" He kicked. "I'm so stupid!"
I walked over to him and start kicking the street sign too.
After a minute or so Wylan stopped and sat on the street curb. I kicked the street sign a few more times then joined him.
"So, you hate psychics too?"
"I don't hate anyone, just myself."
Mood. "Yeah, I know that feeling." I picked at my bracelets. "What's your reason? What do you hate about yourself?"
"What do you hate about yourself?" He asked.
"I, uh," I put my leather bracelets in my mouth and then took them back out. "I have an ability."
"Like Jesper?"
"No, nothing like Jesper." I rubbed my hands over my shaved head. "I can do this thing, where I take things out of my dreams."
"What?"
"You know Chainsaw, my raven?"
"Kind of,"
"She's from my dream. So is the forest."
"How do you-how is that- is this what the future is like?"
"No, I'm the only one, living at least."
He was quiet but I wish he would've said something. My words rang through my head. I'm the only one. That was the only reason I missed K. With K I was no longer alone, though I know that was false. I was the only Greywaren. Somehow, I was even different from him.
But what was I.
With Adam it was easier. He knew what it was like to have no one understand him. To feel alone because of what he could do. But he knew what he was born as.
I didn't even know if I was human.
"I can't read," Wylan finally said.
"Sorry?"
"I come from a wealthy merchant family, and I can't read. My dad was ashamed of me, tried to kill me for it actually. Told me my mom was dead, but actually he sent her off to a mental hospital so he could remarry and have a new kid, a new heir. A better heir. Becuase his first one was me, and I can't even read."
Now the street sign made sense. "That sucks, but you have Jesper, he doesn't seem to care."
"None of them do, but that doesn't mean I don't."
"Yeah," I sighed. "That is true."
"What about your dad?" Wylan asked. "What is he like?"
"Dead," I cleared my throat. "Killed beacuse of what he was."
"Was he like you?"
"Yes...no...it's complicated. How about your dad?"
"He's in jail. I run his business now."
"Impressive,"
"I couldn't do it without Jesper."
"Did you get your mom back?"
"Yes, she lives with me and Jesper now,"
I nodded. He didn't ask about my mom, probably afraid I would answer 'dead' again, which I would. We were in silence for awhile until Jesper came out of Fox Way and sat down on the other side of Wylan. I knew the move, it was a boyfriend swooping in to help.
I got up and walked back inside.
"Is everything okay with Wylan?" Nina asked.
"Are you kidding?" Blue teased. "He just got comforted by Ronan."
I ignored Sargent. "He's fine, his man's with him."
Kaz walked over to the window and spied on them.
"You okay, Kaz?" Inej asked.
Kaz stared a moment more, "I am, but they aren't."
"Kaz Brekker," Nina gasped, "have you developed feelings?"
Kaz turned from the window and rolled his eyes. "I'm just saying I don't think either of them are very happy in that mansion."
"Are you really thinking that," Inej asked. "Or do you just miss them back at the Barrel?"
"It's not like they don't visist, but Jesper was my best shooter and Wylan, well, Wylan is wasted at a merchant."
"Do you miss your apprentice?" Nina teased.
"Shut up,"
Inej and Nina laughed and Kaz shook his head.
Adam walked over to me, "Are you sure he's okay?"
"He will be," I said intertwining my fingers through his.
"What happened?"
"I'll tell you later,"
He leaned his head on my shoulder. Something was wrong. "Are you okay?" I whisper in his hair.
"I'm fine,"
"What happened in the reading after I left?"
His body tensed and he buried his head into my shoulder and grabbed my hand like I was slipping away. "I'll tell you later." I felt more than heard.
I put my other hand on his neck and ran my fingers through his dusty hair trying to assure him I was here. "I'm looking forward to later," I mumbled sarcastically.
