*This is the calm before the storm. If you are not prepared, stop reading and run for the hills. Even if you run for the hills please take some time to appreciate the author of the Harry Potter Franchise, J.K. Rowling.*

This was the most stressful week Hermione Granger-Malfoy had endured in years. She would take wedding planning over this any day. The auror department recruited her as a translator in a rather sensitive case. A child had shown up, unaccompanied in the middle of the ministry lobby, clutching a novel and soaked from head to toe. The child only spoke in farsi and refused to answer any questions. Until, Hermione came along. They went through four other translators before they found one the child was comfortable with. So, Hermione spent the entire day on level two, attempting to track down the child’s family.

Harry gestured towards the door and Hermione nodded. The child didn’t seem to notice Harry’s slight movement and continued playing with the colorful puzzle spread across the interrogation table. Hermione followed Harry out of the room and softly closed the door.

“What do we know so far?”

“Her name is Jaleh, she’s six years old, she recognizes major landmarks around London, her magical status is unclear, and I am fairly sure she understands english, she just refuses to respond to it,” Hermione said.

Harry raised an eyebrow, “How are you sure about the english thing?”

“One of your co workers mentioned chocolate biscuits and her face lit up,” Hermione said with a smile, “Even if she only understood those two words, she knows some english.”

“I’ll start combing through missing persons reports. I know it’s a lot to ask but can you take her to get magic tested?” Harry asked cautiously.

“Of course.”

By the time Hermione got back to her desk, it was nearly five o’clock. Luckily, they were able to locate Jaleh’s family. Jaleh experienced a surge of accidental magic and accidently apperated herself into the ministry. She had visited a few weeks ago for ‘bring your child to work day’, and she wanted to see her mother. Now the child is safe and sound with her parents but Hermione still had work to do. She still had a mountain of paperwork to get through and she knew it was going to be a late night.

A rapid knock interrupted Hermione’s massive workload. She mumbled her usual ‘come in’ and her assistant entered her office with a bright red package.

“This came for you this morning but you were stolen from your desk,” The raven haired woman said as she set the box on her boss’ desk, “Do you need anything before I go?”

Hermione sighed, “Just go home. I’m going to be here late and there’s no reason to keep you here too.” Jill nodded but her feet stayed firmly planted on the floor, “Seriously Jill, go home. There is a very handsome man and a dog waiting for you.”

“I have something to tell you before I go.”

Hermione laughed at Jill’s nervousness, “Jill whatever it is, I’m sure everything will be alright.”

“I’m pregnant so you’re going to have to find a new assistant in about six months. Don’t worry I’ll come back after my maternity leave but I don’t know how much time I’ll take-”

Hermione interrupted Jill’s rant and nearly tackled the woman with a hug, “I’m so happy for you.”

Jill hugged Hermione back and relaxed, “I didn’t know how to tell you and then I saw how good you were with that little girl so I stopped procrastinating.”

Hermione broke their embrace and looked into Jill’s eyes, “Don’t hesitate to tell me anything. You’re like a sister to me. Now go home, please. You need to rest.”

Jill wiped her eyes and made her way towards the office door, “Don’t stay here too late, Draco will worry.”

Hermione shewed Jill away and made her way back to her desk. Hermione attempted to finish case file but the enticing red present on her desk called her name. The brunette took a break from the tedious translations and carefully unwrapped the bright red package. Inside was a golden envelope and a tin of lavender tea.

Thank you for all of your help last month, it was greatly appreciated.

You friend,

Alexandre Montel
Translator, French Ministry of Magic

How sweet, Hermione thought. Hermione took a spare mug out of her desk, waved her wand and the botanicals steeped themselves. The comforting smell of lavender filled Hermione’s nose and it was exactly what she needed to power through the rest of her files.
