My alarm shook me awake and I yawned reaching for my phone. I hadn't been able to sleep last night thinking about everything. 8:00 my phone read. Crap. Crap. Crap. Crap! I slept late. I slept so late. Dammit. I looked down at my pjs. I had slept in my underwear last night. Dammit. I ran around my room grabbing gym shorts and a t-shirt. I didn't have time to do my hair or put in contacts. I grabbed my bag and keys running out to the car. Guess I'm not eating breakfast today. Great.
It was raining again today. Perfect. I pulled in just as the first bell was ringing. So I hopped out of the car running off without locking it. As I sprinted down the path I tripped and fell straight into a puddle. Awesome. Now I get to spend the day muddy and wet. Then if everything couldn't get worse Benny ran up cradling his books in the crook of his arm. He shifted the books and held out his hand to help me up. I stood up on my own and grabbed the edges of his books and pushing them down into the puddle. I walked off without making eye contact. But I felt the little tug at my heart and I looked back over for just a second to see Benny wipe his eye and kneel down to pull his stained books from the mud. Nope. Not helping him. Not a chance. I took off running again to my first class.
"Okay class pull out your History textbook. Jonah please read the first paragraph." My teacher started. Damn, my textbook. "I'm sorry Mr. Jones I overslept and I didn't have time to go to my locker and grab it." He rolled his eyes at me, "Unprepared for class Mr. Martin. I'm going to have to give you a detention. See me after class." The lesson dragged on, Great another detention. I love detention.
Finally it was time for lunch, where nothing could go wrong. Pizza day. Thank goodness. I waited in line for what felt like an hour. I got to the front; there was only one more person ahead of me. Two more pieces! I just made it! The lunch lady placed a piece on the boy's plate in front of me. I could almost taste it. The deliciousness of the hot cheese and... "Could I actually get two pieces?" The boy in front of me said. Don't. Don't. Don't. "Sure, Dear." Gaaaaaaahhhhhh! "I'm sorry honey, we're all out." I huffed and walked out of line. I guess I just won't eat lunch today. I walked back over to my regular table. But today there weren't any chairs open. "Sorry bro, you were in line forever." Fantastic. I sighed and turned. Loser's table?
"Hey Jonah, you can sit with us!" A chipper high pitched voice called. I knew who it belonged to. I sighed and turned, I guess I can sit with Benny. My heart almost skipped a beat. He was sitting at a table looking at me expectantly with his usual bright smile, but there was a girl at his table. She was on the cheer team and Jackie, my girlfriend, knew her. Are they...together. I felt anger and sadness wash over me, or something in between. I couldn't bring myself to sit with them, I was too mad at him. I started to quickly turn around to find a new table, but I misplaced my footing; I fell quickly to the ground.
A roar of laughter filled the room. I got up and rushed out of the room as fast as I could. Stupid. Stupid. Stupid. I don't think I was mad about the fall; I wasn't mad at all. I was almost envious of the girl. Jackie said her name was Sarah, and that she was weird. She didn't seem weird, she seemed to be very friendly with Benny.
I went early to my next class instead of lunch. Little by little classmates strolled into class until the bell rang and we began. "Good Afternoon. Please remove everything from your desks." Why? Why?! The teacher began to hand out the papers. No! I forgot all about the Geometry test! "Thomas please move to the back. Jonah to the front right." The teacher was spreading out the students to the unused rows. So I can't even cheat! I was relatively smart as I said before, but this test was on the points from Algebra 1 that carried over, and I slacked off all last year.
I knew absolutely nothing on that test; and we went over the exact test yesterday. If I had only paid attention. I filled in all the answers, mostly guessing. I'm so screwed. The rest of my classes were still in the honeymoon period. We were meeting everyone, and reviewing, etc. When I finally got to my locker at the end of the day, I opened it and quickly funneled my books in hoping to avoid.... "Hi, Jonah! How are you?" Benny called cheerfully, "Fine" I rolled my eyes.
"You sure, seemed like you had a bad day?"
"That's none of your business" Benny stopped dumbfounded.
"Geez, I'm just trying to help." He said putting a book in his locker.
"Well, I don't need YOUR help."
"I'm sorry Jay." He said meekly.
"It's Jonah." I practically shouted, and go to slam my locker door shut. I accidentally slam it onto my hand. "Gaahh!" The pain shot up and down my shoulder, and tears began to form in my eyes.
"Oh! Here!" Benny gently took my hand in his, grabbing a tissues from his locker and wrapping it around the wound.
"I said I don't need your help!" I pushed him off me harder than I intended; his shoulder bangs into the locker. Everyone looks at us. Benny hadn't moved from up against his locker, he looked like he might cry. He looked sad but there was a flicker of disappointment across his face that hurt me the most.
"Benny I'm sorry." I moved swiftly towards him. I wanted to coddle him and fix my stupid mistake.
"Stay the hell away from me!" Benny said angrily before brushing past me and taking off down the hall. I caught Sarah glaring at me before going off after him. Perfect. I slammed my head against my locker. Just perfect.
After a few minutes I went down the hall and out to the parking lot, but I realized I'd left the keys inside that morning. No! No! No! No! I ran up to my car and grabbed the handle on the door. I yanked it and it flew right open. Thank All that is good and Holy. I smiled in relief the first time that day. I'm just gonna pop in my air pods and have a nice drive home. I reached over to the cup holder where I left them, but they're not there. No. It's not possible. I dug through my bag to no avail. I left my wallet in the glove compartment. I reached over slowly unable to pull it open. I took a breath and.... not there. I slammed my head into the steering wheel and the horn went off. DAMMIT! Ahh! Perfect! Amazing! Isn't that just fantastic! Isn't that just the cherry on top of the ice cream sundae that was today! The only thing that would make it better would be..... "MARTIN! We've got practice in five minutes. Why the hell are you not in the locker room?!" I heard a booming voice shout. I slowly looked over; it was my football coach. That is the only thing that could make this perfect day any better!
Today we were in equipment again, thankfully, so I stepped onto the field for warmups with at least a little pride left. "Suicides 20. And I'll be counting!" Coach yelled at us. Fabulous. We started running to the lines, back and forth, and turn around. It was close to my seventh suicide that I realized, I haven't eaten anything for breakfast or lunch. My head started spinning and my breathing became jagged, but I tried to take deep breaths. To no avail, though, I could see the edges of my peripheral starting to close, with black dots starting to form in front of my eyes. Then everything blurred; and turned black.
I heard people crowding around me but the sounds were muffled. I felt myself lifted and put on something soft. A few moments later somebody gave me a power bar and some water. Coach even said he'd let me to go home early. "Go home and rest up" he said. It was short ride home, but my mom was all nervous because they called her. "I'm fine though. Really" I told her. A lie; but not because of my faint, or my horrible day. I wasn't fine because I knew I hurt Benny, and he was supposed to be my best friend.
