"Derek, where's Scott? I was supposed to pick him up and we were supposed to go to see the new Star Wars!" I ask as I make my way into the McCall's kitchen like I have for the past 12 years. Derek is sitting at their kitchen table eating a bowl of cereal and he smiles when he sees me.
"He left with Allison. Something about going to see the new Fifty Shades movie? Didn't realize he was ditching you though. He's kind of an ass." He says and I snicker.
Derek's mom and Scott's dad were together before he got with Melissa. When Derek's mom died suddenly in an accident when Derek was only a year old, with no other family to turn to, he was turned over to the custody of his father, who at the time, had a very pregnant wife who was as shocked as he was. But they worked through it, and raised the two boys as brothers, so when their dad took off, both were crushed but were supportive of their mother. And even though Derek was not biologically hers, Melissa continued to care for the two boys equally, giving them the best life she could.
I was 6 when I was first introduced to Scott in Kindergarten and we quickly became best friends, and then later I met Derek, and we became good friends too.
"Well, I guess I'm gonna go see it alone then." I say with a groan and turn back towards the door, keys in hand.
"Wait! Want me to come with? I'll watch it with you if you want. From how much you babble about it, I'm pretty sure I know the whole series without ever watching a movie." Derek smirks and I stop to think.
"I-I, yeah! If you want to come." I sputter and he chuckles and nods.
"Let me go get changed and I'll be right down. If you buy the tickets, I'll buy the popcorn!" He shouts as he runs upstairs.
"Umm- yeah! Sounds good!" I laugh and once I know he can't see me, I start punching the air.
I have had the biggest crush on Derek for likely 3 years now, but of course he has never noticed. Why would he? I'm his little brother's best friend, I'm not supposed to fall in love with my best friend's brother! No matter how handsome, smart, incredibly kind, and funny they are.
Derek comes back down the stairs with a smile on his face and is pulling on his jacket when he rejoins me in the kitchen.
"Ready to go?" He asks and I nod, grabbing my keys from my pocket and heading for the front door. Derek locks it behind him, and we hop in my Jeep.
We get to the theatre and I pay for the tickets, and once we get inside Derek buys us both a popcorn and a soda, even though I told him I didn't need one.
Sitting next to him throughout the movie I couldn't slow my heart rate if I tried. I don't understand why I get so nervous next to him when I've known him for 12 years now. It surely didn't help when his arm found his way to the back of my seat; however I tried not to over think it because he had his arm stretched out on the empty seat beside him too.
By the end of the night, I drive Derek back to his house and he smiles at me as we pull into the driveway.
"Thanks for coming with me." I smile and he nods his head.
"It was a good movie, I enjoyed it. Thanks for driving me." He smiles and I blush slightly, which is thankfully hidden by the nightfall darkness.
"We should do this again sometime." He says and I nod.
"I like spending time with just you sometimes. I don't have to hear about Allison every 5 seconds." I joke and Derek chuckles.
"That's true. Well, goodnight Stiles. I'll see you later." He smiles and clambers out of the Jeep, pausing on the front step to wave at me.
I wave back at him before throwing the Jeep into reverse and backing out of their driveway.
Tonight was a good night.

The next time I hang out with Derek, Scott has once again blown me off to go see Allison after work instead of hanging out and playing video games.
"Scott! Come on man! You said you'd play the new COD with me tonight! You just got laid the other night when you ditched me to go watch that porno movie with her! You owe me this!" I whine as he grabs his keys.
"She's home alone Stiles. Someone needs to make sure she stays safe." Scott shrugs as he walks out the door.
"AND SHE'LL BE SAFE ON YOUR DICK?!" I yell at him as I watch him walk down the walkway to his car.
"Ditched again?" Derek asks appearing behind me.
"JESUS!" I scream and whip around, leaning over to catch my breath after he scared the absolute shit out of me.
"A bell! We need to get you a bell!" I pant and he chuckles.
Dammit. He gets the best dimples when he smiles like that.
"But yes, again. He told me to bring my new game over and we'd hang out and play it. Now I have to go home and play it by myself, while purging myself on Chinese food." I sigh picking up my backpack.
"Well, why don't you stay? I'll play it with you, and I happen to love Chinese food." Derek suggests and I give him a look.
"Don't you have any other plans? Not to sound rude or unappreciative, but a guy like you usually has other things to do than hang around and play video games."
"For the record, no. I don't have any other plans, but spending the night playing video games with you, and purging ourselves on Chinese food actually sounds like a lot of fun." Derek smirks and I shake my head in disbelief but chuckle.
"Okay. You order from Chow's and I'll set up the game." I say as I set my bag back down and dig out the game.
I hear Derek placing the order from the kitchen and I turn on the console.
"It'll be here in half an hour." Derek says walking in and taking a controller off the coffee table, plopping himself down on the couch beside me.
"Ready to get your ass beat?" I ask with a smirk and he grins evilly.
"You can try, but I'm gonna whip your ass so hard."
"Careful, I might like it." I comment back with a wink, and he's taken aback but begins to laugh.
"Kinky." He chuckles and we begin to play the game.
We play for the half hour before the food gets here, and when it finally does, we spread it out on the coffee table, sharing each container and laughing as I give up on chopsticks and go for a fork.
"God gave me many skills, the ability to use chopsticks to eat was not one of them." I sigh as I sit back down and Derek laughs around a mouthful of food.
"So what are your plans for next year? For college?" Derek asks and I swallow my food before answering.
"I'm going for a degree in criminology, UCLA. Then coming back and working at the station. I want to follow my dad's footsteps, maybe be sheriff someday." I smile and Derek nods his head.
"I'm at UCLA too, so I guess we'll see a lot of each other." He smiles gently and I nod.
"English major, right?" I ask and he nods his head before picking up a spring roll with his chopsticks.
"I think you'll like it there. We could even room together if you wanted to find a place together. There's lots of apartment near campus." Derek suggests and I look at him in shock.
"Really? Why would you wanna live with me? I'm just your brother's nerdy friend. I'd likely just annoy you." I sigh and he looks very serious before he turns to me.
"Stiles, I've known you since you were 6 years old, and I was 7. If you think I don't know what I'd be getting myself into, you're mistaken." Derek smiles gently and I feel myself relax a bit.
"Okay, but what about if you want to bring girls home?"
"Well first off, I'm gay." Derek smirks and I stutter before continuing.
"Okay, guys! What if you want to bring guys home?" I frown.
"Do you really think I'm that type of guy? I had sex once, when I was 16, with a girl. I haven't slept with anyone since, but all I know is that if I watch porn with a girl and a guy, it's not the girl I watch." Derek smirks and I feel my face go beet red.
"Okay then." I mumble and turn back to our game.
"Sorry. I just wanted to get my point across." Derek sighs and I nod my head with a chuckle.
"Message received, loud and clear!" I smile and he laughs.
"Good."

"Scott! You better get your ass down here and help me eat all of this chocolate! I have too many problems and too much chocolate to deal with myself!" I yell as I walk into the McCall house, bag of chocolate in hand and a day full of problems ready for me to complain about.
"Scott?" I call out and it's Derek that answers.
"Scott's not here. He got picked up by Allison about an hour ago. Did he ditch you again?" He asks and I shake my head.
"No, I forgot it was their date night. I didn't even call him to see if he was home. This one's on me." I sigh and drop my shoulders in a pout.
"So what's the bag of chocolate for?" He asks and I sigh before continuing.
"I had one hell of a day and I just needed to rant to Scott about it while stuffing my fat face with chocolate." I pout and he chuckles before nodding.
"I'm available to talk if you want? I also love chocolate so I will gladly share them with you. Did you get M&M's? Those are my favourite." He smiles and we head to the living room couch.
"Mom will be home around 6, if you want to stay for dinner. I know your dad works late on Thursdays." Derek suggests with a gentle smile and I smile brightly back at him.
"Sure! I haven't seen Mel in awhile now. Wait-how'd you remember that?" I ask with a confused chuckle and he shrugs.
"I don't know, I just remember things about you. I know your favourite colour is green, but not a bright green, a nice olive green colour."
"Like your eyes." I mumble and he blushes but continues.
"I know you love to read, especially comic books, and you have the most interesting collection of information memorized in your incredibly large brain of yours. You could likely tell me about the origin of dildos and know it all by heart." He says with a laugh and I nod my head in agreement.
"See, I know a lot about you Stiles. You're an interesting person." Derek says with a smile and it's my turn to blush.
"Thanks Der. You're a good friend."
"So what made today so awful?" He asks pulling out the first chocolate bar.
"Well, this guy named Brian...."

About a month later I've hung out with Derek a lot more often, and that includes right now.
We're sitting at their kitchen island, 11:30 at night, eating a huge sundae out of one bowl, laughing and just talking. Scott is passed out on the living room couch, and Melissa is busy at the hospital working a night shift.
"Do we have any more cherries? I need some more." I ask and Derek grabs them from the counter behind him.
"Your cherries, sir!" He says with an awful accent and a bow.
"You're an idiot." I laugh and throw a cherry at him.
"Hey! Rude!" He gasps and chucks it back at me, missing me and it lands somewhere on the floor behind me.
"Why didn't we think of doing this sooner? This is a fantastic idea." I ask and he shrugs.
"Most of our ideas are fantastic. Two brilliant minds come up with great things." He smirks and I laugh.
We eat a few more bites of ice cream before he turns to me.
"So, what are your plans for the future? I know you already wanna follow your dad's footsteps, but what about a family?" He asks curiously and I stop to ponder the question.
"Well, ideally I would marry a millionaire, live in a big mansion, never work another day in my life, and adopt a bunch of kids and spoil them rotten." I explain and he chuckles before speaking again.
"And realistically?"
"Realistically, I want to marry someone who makes me laugh, and who loves me for me. Someone who will support my career and I can support theirs. I want to have a few kids, and have a nice house outside of town. Far enough away from people, but close enough for emergencies and to visit my dad. And a dog! I never had one growing up, and every kid deserves to have a dog." I sigh happily and Derek nearly drops his spoon.
"Sorry, kinda sappy and likely unrealistic, but it's always been my dream." I sigh and he shakes his head.
"No! I think that sounds amazing! It's actually pretty damn identical to what I want my future to look like." He says with a gentle voice and I look up at him.
"Really?"
"Yeah. That sounds incredible." He nods and I look him dead in the eyes.
I don't say anything after that, I don't have anything to say. Derek places his spoon back into the sundae bowl while continuing to watch me, never breaking the eye contact once.
He takes a step closer to me and I find myself moving towards him as well. We're chest to chest, lips about an inch apart from one another when there's a loud bang from the living room, and we hear Scott walking towards the kitchen. Derek and I jerk away from one another and he rubs the back of his neck nervously while I stare at the floor, blush painting my face red.
"What are you guys doing in here?" Scott asks wiping the sleep from his eyes.
"We-um-we were just eating some ice cream." Derek says and I nod, moving to look at the other two.
"Yeah, we were just chatting and eating ice cream." I mumble and Scott frowns tiredly.
"Derek, don't you work tomorrow?" He asks and Derek nods his head.
"I'd recommend heading to bed soon, it's late." Scott says sitting down at the island and taking a spoonful of ice cream.
"Yeah, you're likely right. Will you help Stiles clean up if I head to bed?" Derek asks and Scott nods.
"Okay. Night Scott, good night Stiles." He says with a gentle smile before turning and leaving the room.
"Dude, we need to get you laid. It's kinda weird you spending so much time with my brother." Scott chuckles and I glare at him when he's not looking.
'If you hadn't come into the kitchen when you did I could be getting laid right now!' I think to myself but shake it off and continue to help clean up the ingredients and stuff Derek and I used for the sundae.

"Scott! I look ridiculous!" I whine as Scott gels back my hair, looking proud of himself.
"She's a classy girl, you need to look presentable." Scott says as he continues to slick back my hair.
He's got me dressed up in a pair of blue jeans, a dress shirt that he very aggressively tucked into my jeans, and I must say, I look stupid! If she was going to think I was repulsive before, now it's definite.
Derek coughs from the door way, leaning against the doorframe, and he's got a smirk on his face.
"Derek! Yes! Please tell Scott how ridiculous I look!" I beg and he chuckles but nods.
"He does look pretty stupid." He tells Scott, who huffs and throws his hands up.
"Fine! You fix him then! I have to go get ready myself!" He glares and heads to his room.
Derek chuckles but walks closer to me.
"Here, let me fix you up properly." He says rolling up the sleeves of the shirt, and then running his hand through my hair to mess it up.
"So where are you two going?" He asks with a smirk.
I glare at him and huff.
"On a stupid double date. Him and Allison think this girl will be the 'perfect girl' for me. I don't even want to go!" I complain and he looks concerned.
"Not looking forward date? I get that." He nods.
"No, it's not that. I'm just not looking for a girlfriend." I mutter quietly and Derek perks up.
"Really? So if Scott was setting you up with a guy you'd want to go on this date?" He asks as he continues to work on my appearance.
"Not necessarily. I've kinda got my eye on someone right now, but with my luck they'd never actually feel the same about me." I sigh and he looks down at me.
"You might just be surprised." He says quietly and I feel my heart skip a beat.
We hear Scott walking back towards the bathroom and Derek straightens out my shirt.
"That's better. Rolled sleeves are sexy, and you look much better with the messy, bed head hair." Derek smiles and I smile back.
"Thanks, Derek." I say, letting my hand linger on his arm and he smiles brightly back at me.
"Any time." He nods.
He gives me a once over one more time before slipping behind me to head out of the bathroom, making sure to glide his hand along my lower back as he did so.
Later that night, I get a text from Derek asking about the date.
