Billboard : Behind 'Love Yourself: Her' Album: 'This Is the Beginning of Our Chapter Two'
9/20/2017 by Jeff Benjamin

From the meaning of "Go Go" to why the band needed to flex their win at BBMAs, BTS' Rap Monster explains it all.

BENJAMIN: ...The last song, "Outro: Her" really spoke to me. It almost reads like a diary.

RM: "Ha!" [Laughs]

BENJAMIN: After talking with you, it feels like it recaps the whole album and is really introspective.

RM: "I think that was the fastest work I did for this album. I wrote the verse in 20 minutes; it just came, very truthfully, from the bottom of my heart. I thought it was the right outro for this album because it is really a range of emotions -- I'm saying I met this person that I really love, this person is the love of my life right now, I'm saying that I was confused and I was looking for love and this world is complex. But I think it's you so, "I call you 'her,' 'cause you're my tear." "I think you're the start and the end of me." That's what I'm saying: You're my wonder, but you're also my answers. You're my "her," but you're still the "tear." "

RM: "The hook is saying that love is not all about the happiness, it's just not just about the joy, it's not just about delight. If you want to love a person, you should know that there are tears and there can even be hatred inside of it. I think a love really includes all of that. That's what I was trying to say. It's complex."

BENJAMIN: The lyrics are very meaningful. I'm wondering if you had someone specific in mind while writing them?

("Lee JungMi," NamJoon almost says out loud, "I wrote them for Lee JungMi.")

RM: [Laughs] "No, no one specific."

It's September already...

A full year since he went to her book signing at the Daeo bookstore; a full year since he last got to talk with her face to face.

Most people would have given up by now, but he's not sure if most people have what they have, and that is something worth waiting for.

And waiting is what NamJoon has been doing.

He still visits the bookstore when he can, but those times may have been inconvenient for JungMi since she wasn't there when he went.

NamJoon hasn't been able to see JungMi yet, but he sees her in everything he does.

While he's on stage performing, he sees her face amidst the crowd at the barricade.

While writing in his studio, he wonders if she would approve of his lyrics.

When he reads a new book, he's always thinking about what she would discuss and what she would bring to his attention.

When he bikes through Ttukseom in his downtime, he wonders what she's up to nowadays.

When the dating rumors arose a few months ago and they had to deal with it on separate ends, he wondered how she was doing. He wanted to reach out to her then, but the representative from JungMi's side said it would be best if they didn't correspond with each other while both sides deal with the media; finding out that they actually know each other would add fuel to the flames and completely ruin the statements given by their respective representatives.

Because of this, NamJoon is unsure if JungMi's representative passed along his message to her: "stay strong; I'm with you. Call me if you ever need to talk to someone."
