Rebecca opened her eyes and was immediately met by bright lights above her, and a pain in her head. She blinked a few times as her eyes became adjusted to the lights and looked around at the hospital room, she was in a bed, an IV was in her hand, she looked to the corner to see her daughter curled up in a wooden chair that sat next to a wall.
She placed her hand on the tiny bump and felt the monitors that were attached to her.. the pain in her head came back again and she grabbed her head and took a deep breath trying not to be too loud to not wake up her daughter.. too late.
"Mommy" Remi sat up as soon as she heard her mother "You woke up" she said
"Remi.." Rebecca said "Do you know what happened?"
"I heard you fall and you wouldn't wake up so I called for help"
"You called for help.. good girl" she smiled and Remi walked over to her
"Daddy's coming home.. they sent a fast plane for him"
"A jet?" Rebecca asked and the little girl nodded
"Remi how long have we been here?"
"It was 8 last night" she said and Rebecca found the clock on the wall 6:41AM, it had been almost 11 hours.. she had been out for 11 hours
"I've been out that long?" she was becoming concerned but she didn't want her daughter to see that
"You woke up on the ride here and then the doctor said he was giving you sleepy medicine so you could sleep because you needed it"
"Have they said anything about your sister?" she asked and the little girl shook her head
"They don't say much to me"
A nurse came in thirty minutes later to check on Rebecca, she was informed that they determined she was exhausted and extremely dehydrated which was the cause of the cramping and the fainting. They hooked her up to an IV drip of fluids to rehydrate her and she was being placed on bedrest.
They were going to order an ultrasound to check on the baby after the fall, they became more concerned when Rebecca wasn't feeling movement at all during the time she was awake.
Colby landed in Chicago 30 minutes after Rebecca woke up and was getting the news of everything that was happening. He got a car and drove faster than what was legal to get to the hospital and arrived an hour and a half later.
He practically ran to the room after getting the information from the receptionist at the desk.
He walked in the room and saw Rebecca laying in the bed hooked up to IV's and a few wires coming from her chest under a gown, Remi was curled up against her mother's side asleep.
"Rebecca" he said as he walked over to her and she held her arms out and grabbed onto him tightly
"I'm sorry" she apologized
"Shh.. It's okay" he said and pulled away to look at her "It's okay" he nodded and she shook her head
"She's not moving Colby and they can't find her heartbeat on the fetal doppler"
"Don't say that" he shook his head
"They want to do an ultrasound.. the technician was going to get the mobile one and she and the doctor will be back soon"
"She's fine" he said
"She is always moving, she's not moving for anything.. they've tried everything, she won't move for anything"
"The dehydration.. did this cause this?" Colby asked as the doctor came into the room and Remi moved to sit on the chair
"The dehydration coupled with exhaustion caused the fainting and the cramping, as far as not finding the heartbeat or feeling movement that can be contributed to a number of things" the doctor nodded
They started the ultrasound and Colby reached for Rebecca's hand and held it tightly against his chest
"Just relax, I know this is terrifying but you need to relax.. both of you" the doctor said looking between the husband and wife as the technician moved the transducer around Rebecca's abdomen
"Are you finding it?" Colby asked
"We're looking" the technician said as she pushed a few more buttons
"Something's wrong.." Rebecca said in a whisper "You should have found her by now"
"Don't even go there" Colby said
It was silent in the room, everyone was holding their breath, listening intently for any sound.. and then
Thump.Thump.Thump. it sounded like a horse galloping and Rebecca knew that sound immediately
"That's it.." she said "That's her heartbeat" she stated as the tears she'd been holding back now fell like a waterfall
"That is her heartbeat" the doctor nodded
"Oh my god" Colby let out the breath he had been holding shakily
"She's okay" Rebecca nodded
"It seems like baby wanted to play hide and seek with us" the doctor smiled
"You are so grounded kid" Colby shook his head and he kissed his wife
All of the build up of emotion of the day but more so the last 20 minutes was poured into that kiss.
"We're going to give you something in your IV to hopefully get her moving" the doctor said and Rebecca nodded as she and the tech left the room
"I swear to god little girl, don't you EVER do that again" Colby said as he placed a gentle kiss on Rebecca's abdomen
"I've never been so scared, through anything" Rebecca shook her head as she wrapped her arms around her husband's neck tightly and he just held her as she cried and Remi came over and climbed into the bed and wrapped her arms around her mother as well
"She's okay Mommy" Remi said
"She is" Colby nodded as Rebecca laid back against the pillows and he wiped the tears off her cheeks and kissed her quickly
"Hey sister" Remi said as she got right up against the tiny bump "Hide and seek is a dumb game.. you're not very smart, we know where you are cause you can't get out" she rolled her little eyes and her parents laughed slightly and the mood was lightened for the first time
"I love you" Colby said
"I love you" Rebecca nodded
