"She is so beautiful Colby, I can't wait to get over there" Annette said as she was on FaceTime with Colby who was sitting on the foldout couch holding a sleeping Riley in his arms
"We can't wait for you to come over, she's ready for her Nan snuggles" Colby said and his mother-in-law smiled
"How is Rebecca?" she asked and Colby moved the phone slightly to show Rebecca was also asleep in the hospital bed
"She's exhausted.. and rightfully so but she's amazing, she's gorgeous" he smiled
"I can imagine, you two have both been up for what? Almost thirty six hours? and twenty three of those were hard work not just for Rebecca but for you as well.." she nodded
"I didn't do anything" he shook his head
"You did though, you had to be her support, you had to be her rock and that is emotionally exhausting"
"I thought I was going to pass out a couple of times actually"
"And that right there.." she started "That is how I know you love my daughter" she smiled "It's difficult to watch someone you love so much be in pain and there's nothing you can do" Annette nodded "It almost sends your emotions into overdrive and your body doesn't know how to respond"
"I'm in love with your daughter" he nodded and he heard a tiny whimper come from the bundle in his arms and Annette smiled
"Duty calls Dad" Annette said and Colby smiled as he shushed the baby "Tell Rebecca I love her and to call me when she can"
"Will do" he nodded
After ending the call with Annette, Colby placed the phone down on the table next to him and stood up gently bouncing the baby with each step he took but the longer she whimpered the louder she got.
"Riley.." Colby shook his head as he looked over at Rebecca "Your mommy's really tired, I don't want to wake her up" he said and the newborn let out an official cry
"That's Mommy's job" he heard Rebecca's voice and turned around to see her sitting up slightly and holding her arms out
"I didn't want to wake you" he said "You're exhausted" he said and she nodded as they gently passed the newborn between them
"I am" Rebecca nodded "but she has to eat, whenever she's hungry you have to give her to me" she explained as she watched her daughter begin to eat as she looked up at her
"How long have you been awake?"
"Since the first little whimper"
"How did you hear that? You were knocked out" he shook his head
"Remember those Momma bear instincts I told you about before? Perfect example, I know when she needs me before she even lets me know" she said
"Riley, Your mommy can read your mind already and you're only 4 hours old.. that's not good for you when you get older kid" he said as he sat down next to his wife on the bed
"When can we go get Remi from your mom?" Rebecca asked
"You're ready for her? You don't want to rest a little bit?"
"I know she's probably driving your mom insane since we texted and let her know she's here" she looked down at Riley
"I can go get her, take her to get food and pick up whatever you want"
"Do you think the coffee shop is still open? I really want that Avocado toast"
"Even if they've closed I'll call somebody in from home"
"I love you" she smiled up at him
"Are you sure you're gonna be okay by yourself?"
"I'll be fine" she nodded as she patted the baby on the back gently to burp her "Go get Remi so she can meet her little sister" she nodded and Colby leaned down capturing her lips quickly
"I think next time we need to do this at home"
"Do what at home?" he asked
"Our next baby" she said and his eyes widened
"You just gave birth 4 hours ago and you're already talking about another one? Are you insane?"
"It might be a combination of deliriousness and just overall love"
"I mean I love you, but let's let you recover from this before we start talking about more.." he shook his head with a laugh "and let's see how we handle two"
"Go get Remi" she said pushing him gently from the bed and he laughed
"I'm going" he said with a nod as he leaned down and placed a gentle kiss on Riley's head and then a kiss to Rebecca's lips
"Call me if you need anything else" he said and she nodded as she watched him walk out of the room
"He's gone Riley.. it's just us" Rebecca looked down at her daughter "Me and you need to have a little chat" she said "You are obviously very strong willed and stubborn considering what you put me through for almost 24 hours.. so let's get one thing straight here, what I say goes" she said and the newborn looked up at her staring into her eyes, she was wide awake as her mother talked to her "You're going to have a very interesting life but don't worry your sister will show you the ropes" she laughed slightly "You'll get used to the puns and roll your eyes at me every time like your sister does" she said and the newborn continued to hold her eyes as they stared at each other "Are we having a staring contest? You're not going to win" she shook her head and the little newborn let out a tiny sneeze "Oh my goodness, okay fine you win" she nodded and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead "I love you"
