Gemma's POV:

"Move it, little girl!" Someone growled at me from the unreasonably busy health clinic. In all honesty, I wasn't sure what I was doing there.

Maybe it was the fact that I found my real birth certificate at the bottom of my dad's closet.

As it turns out, my dad isn't really my dad. I was kidnapped or something, because the man who raised me wasn't the man I thought he was.

Not that he was very good at raising me. Beating me was the way he raised me. It didn't work out well for him.

"Sorry." I muttered as I stepped aside. Stepping aside was an instinctual reaction. Dad engrained it into me. Wait... He wasn't my dad. He was some weirdo who took me from my home when I was a baby.

The lady behind the counter looked down at me, her pencil halfway in her mouth as she chewed it. I wrinkled my nose but didn't let that interfere with what I had to do.

"Can I help you?" The woman asked, her tone irritated and bored. I put my birth certificate on the counter and slid it to her.

"The man I'm living with, who claims to be my father, isn't. I found my real birth certificate yesterday. I need to test my blood against the system to see if I have any blood relatives in the system." I said softly, making sure that no one was paying attention to what I was saying.

The lady looked disbelieving before calling over her boss. She told him my story and his eyes widened before he snatched up my birth certificate.

He read over it and then ushered me back into a doctors office.

"You do realize that we have to involve the police if you're right?" The man asked me like I was stupid. I cocked my head at him.

"Of course I know that. If I'm right, I want you to get the police involved." I told him. He nodded, took my blood, and then left the room. He made me wait in the waiting room for two hours.

Good thing I told dad that I was going to be out for several hours. Not that he cared. He slapped me twice and then sent me on my way.

"Ms. Perigoso, I think we need to discuss your situation in private." A nurse whispered in my ear. I was right. I wasn't a Williams.

I followed her into a doctor's office and she sat me down on one of those fancy doctor office chairs with the paper on it, and then left. She gave me my birth certificate before she left.

The doctor walked into the room with a terrified expression on his face.

"Ms. Perigoso, to put it bluntly, you were correct in your assumption. We found one of your brother's in the system." The doctor said, sitting down on a spinning stool. I blinked in shock. I hadn't expected to have a brother.

"Wait, one brother? As in there's more than one?" I asked quickly, scooting to the edge of my seat. The doctor nodded, rubbing his temples.

Who were my brothers if they made the doctor look this stressed?

"Yes, Ms. Perigoso. There's more than one brother. You have four brothers. I've already contacted the only brother who is... Suitable to take over your guardianship." The doctor said, rubbing his hands together in his lap.

Who was he to decide who took care of me?

"Excuse me? Don't you think I have a right to choose who I want to live with?" I asked, arching an eyebrow at the doctor. The doctor went pale and instantly started to try and retract his statement.

"Well... I mean, it is the law... Not that it isn't unfair, but it is what it is. Anyways, Mr. Perigoso has been informed. He will be here later this afternoon. The police will be here momentarily. They'll want to discuss several things with Mr. Perigoso before you go." The doctor, whose name tag said Brad, said hurriedly.

"What did they say happened to me when I was a kid?" I asked quickly, not wanting to not get an answer for that question in particular.

Doctor Brad stopped, his hand on the door handle. He took a deep breath, like he was preparing himself to say something horrible. I hoped it wasn't all that bad.

Please just say that I've been missing, please just say that I've been missing.

"Until today, Ms. Perigoso, you've been legally dead for twelve years." Doctor Brad said. If I hadn't been in shock, I would've noticed the apologetic look on his face. I would've noticed the tremor in his voice or his shaking hands.

But I was too shocked to do anything.

There's a difference between finding out that your abusive, piece of crap dad isn't actually your dad and finding out that you've been dead your entire life.

When did I technically die? How? Why?

Who was my family?

If my kidnapper, George, had allowed me a phone I would've looked them up. But, alas, no phone.

I sat in the waiting room until the police arrived. Two female officers entered the room, one smiling warmly and the other looking like she wished she could be doing anything else.

Well, I didn't tell you to do this with your life. I thought sarcastically in her direction.

Like she could sense my thoughts, she glared at me. I gave her the same icy glare back.

"Hi, Gemma, right?" The first, nice female officer asked. I nodded, moving to look at her better. She sat down where Doctor Brad had been sitting, leaving her partner standing.

"Yeah. I honestly don't know what I can tell you." I shrugged, looking at them with a sheepish look. I didn't want them to think that I knew something serious about my... Past life, I guess, and think that I could help them.

I didn't know who my brothers were.

I didn't know who my parents were.

Better yet, I didn't even know who I was supposed to be.

That shouldn't have been a problem that I was facing at twelve years old. But here I was.

The officer's looked between each other slyly before looking at me with sincere concern.

"We think you may be able to help us nail George Williams for running drugs and guns in and out of Mexico."
