The warm water surrounded him as he darted around schools of fish and other merfolk. The merfolk sent glares and looks of disbelief as Colby swam past them quickly, causing the water to rush their way. "Sorry!" He called out with a laugh, not slowing down as he flipped his dark blue fin.
He arrives at the rocks where he and his friends met, it was hidden by larger rocks, seaweed, and anemones. When he got there his few friends smiled at him and laughed, "Finally!" His friend, Brennen, called out.
Colby swam up to them and smirked, laying on top of a rock with his stomach down against it and his head rested in his hands. "I'm here, don't worry." He joked, they all laughed a little before carrying on conversation.
"It's getting late guys, we should head back." Devyn said, latching her hand onto her boyfriend Corey's.
Everyone nodded and mumbled something of agreement before making their way back, before they made it completely Colby stopped. "I'll see you guys tomorrow, I have somewhere to be."
"You do this every time, where could you be going? You know we can't swim once it's night, the water gets too dark.." Brennen pointed out, moving his hand around as he spoke.
"I know, it's fine. Glow tail, remember?" Merfolk had special abilities, some anyway, Colby was able to light his tail to a blue glow. They all said their goodbyes, Colby swan towards their spot again before looking around to make sure no one was near.
The coast was clear, he darted forward and towards land. Once the ocean floor began sloping upwards he went with it till he saw the surface. Breaking away from the ocean floor, he swam upwards and slowly poked his head out of the water.
A blonde boy was sitting on the beach, his eyes were closed and his head was slightly tossed back as the wind blew at his hair. Colby's seen him before, each time he's been in awe at his breathtaking beauty. The boy on the beach stood, making Colby quickly go under water and waiting a moment.
After a while, he poked his head up and saw the boy was gone, father onto shore where he'd not be able to go. At school they'd taught the merfolk about land walkers, or humans, and a little bit about land.
He'd seen through a window a little figure moving around, suddenly though the figure darted from the window and disappeared. When he saw the figure reappear at the patio door, he noticed the flash of blonde hair and he quickly dove under the water.
Fear flew over him, he wondered if the boy saw him. He went under a little farther, swimming around and waiting before surfacing once again. When he did, the moon left a glow on the water, he breathed in the fresh air and sighed.
Colby swam a little closer to land, he swam all the way up to where the water just covered his tail still. Stopping though, he tried seeing if he could run the grains of sand through his fingers but failed- not being able to reach. This was incredibly dangerous for him, this was also very against the rules but he needed to do it.
He looked to the blonde boys window, he watched one day and saw him in the room making him realize it was his, and saw the light flick off. The mysterious blonde boy seemed to be around his age, the only thing that stopped him from befriending him was him being a human, and rules.
"I'll speak with one someday, blonde boy.." Colby called out, biting his lips with sadness before swimming back down towards the deep.
Swimming for a few minutes, he reached the deep and his underwater city late. There were glows of light from fish or certain corals which made the city burst with life, some merpeople still swam at night but it was mostly peaceful.
Reaching home, Colby took a deep breath before swimming in and seeing the anger plastered on his fathers face. "Jesus, Cole. Your mother had been worried sick! We have told you to stop staying out so late, or at least inform us before you do!"
"I-I know, I'm sorry. My friends and I lost track of time, we were having fun at the ship graveyard." He lied, the ship graveyard was an area that was about a three minute swim from their city, wrecked ships and such made it a little hangout for the teen merfolk.
"I know you were having fun, I don't mean to yell but-" His mother appeared, resting a hand on his fathers shoulder. "We can't lose you, too.."
Colby bit his lip nervously, the thought of his brother awake in each of their minds. "I'll start telling you where I'm going, I-I'm sorry." His mother engulfed him in a hug, they filled with sadness but being submerged in water it was impossible to cry.
"You can stay out later, but.. don't ever go places alone. Hear me?" His mother asked as she raised his chin, he nodded and smiled weakly before going to his own quarters and resting.
He looked around, seeing his little rock collection, his pet fish in a comfy and cozy cage, then he looked down t his shimmery fun.
On the nights like this, when he was down and having thoughts he'd want to escape his brother would always swim to their roof with him and look out at the light glowing city. They'd talk about a million random things until happiness provoked them, then would say their good nights.
Colby missed his brother a large amount, he'd always make the best out of situations when Colby couldn't. He rolled over and tried his hardest to close his eyes and eliminate the bad thoughts, but they wouldn't go away.
Swimming out his window, he snuck up and laid across their roof. The glow of the town shimmered in his eyes, for some reason he couldn't help but want someone with him. He thought of love, what it would be like to hold someone's hand and peer over the view. Being able to have his first kiss and feeling the amazing burst of waves in his stomach, the amazing feeling of it being exactly right.
Merfolk were destined to someone, but the downfall was they don't always find the one person they're supposed to.
With a heavy sigh, he went back into his room of coral and rock, laying on his seaweed made bed and doing all his could to let his mind drift away. Right before he closed his eyes, a smile appeared as the blonde boy randomly popped in his mind.
