Chapter Fourteen: Welcome to my Mind

"said that we're not lovers, we're just strangers
with the same damn hunger, to be touched,
to be loved, to feel anything at all"

Our shift felt never ending, but when Aliana finally stepped into the diner ten minutes passed eleven, the both of us got dressed in the clothes we came to work in before getting into a Uber.

Instead of getting straight shots, we ordered ourselves a peach cocktail, sitting on the bar stools while doing so.

While we were drinking, though, I couldn't help but notice how Sophie was staring at me with anxiousness. I didn't bother asking why at first, but once we ordered our second cocktail, I turned my stool toward her, fully facing her.

"Are you okay?" I asked, raising my brows.

She licked her lower lip as she nodded in a rush. "Yeah, of course," she said quickly. "Why would you think I wasn't?"

"Because you're staring at me like you robbed a bank and I'm about to turn you in," I deadpanned, crossing my arms. "You look nervous."

It took a few seconds before she parted her lips, releasing everything that she'd held back. "Okay, listen. I remember that girl who walked into the diner like over a week ago. She looked familiar but I didn't push it. But I saw her again a few days ago and when I saw Chris talk to her, I asked him and he said you guys were best friends. And then I got to thinking—why did you run off when she first came into the diner if you're friends? Why are you being weird right now as I'm talking about it?"

"I'm not being weird," I muttered pathetically, looking at my lap to watch as my fists clenched on top of it.

I peeked up, seeing her nod, determined. "You are. Your aura is going off, I can't read one thing," she took a deep breath before smiling sadly. I forced my head up higher so I could meet her forest green eyes head on. "Are you guys not friends anymore?"

I kept my eyes on her, my expression sober. It was a few moments later when I nodded once. "Honestly, I'm surprised you held it in this long," I spoke admirably. Sophie didn't like talking shit, but she was too curious about things that didn't involve her.

"Please tell me," she pleaded, lacing her fingers together. "I've been biting my tongue for so long, Mon, please," she nearly cried out, and I couldn't help but laugh.

   "What's your sign again?"

She stopped for a moment, her brows furrowed, probably confused to where I was getting with this. "Cancer, why?"

"Are Cancers supposed to be this nosy?" I raised my brows teasingly.

Her first bodily reaction was to blush before she shook her head. "Usually Scorpios are nosy. Gemini and Libra's too," she chuckled nervously. "I don't know why I'm like this, but please tell me. It's actually killing me inside."

I wanted to laugh with amusement, but I couldn't. Memories of Meredith haunted me, and our time together. Especially after my mom got arrested... how emotionless I'd been to her.

Meredith sat across from me, sliding into the booth while keeping her dark eyes narrowed on me. She shoved the plate of pizza toward me, raising her brows. "Eat, babe."

"I'm not hungry," I mumbled, shoving it back.

She rolled her eyes. Right now, the two of us looked the complete opposite appearance wise. She'd worn a face full of makeup, her hair had been curled as well. She always dressed her best self, for herself. She wore a cute dress that flaunted her figure and had a bandana around head. Pieces of her hair were pulled away, so it would be in front of the bandana instead of hidden behind it.
