Tom's parents divorced in 1960 and Tom, went with their father, while the youngest Jim stayed with their mother. In his childhood, Tom's family moved often; by the age of 10, he had lived in 10 different houses.

In 1981, Tom met actress Rita on the set of TV comedy Bosom Buddies .They were reunited in 1985 on the set of Volunteers.
Rita is of Greek and Bulgarian descent, and a member of the Greek orthodox church before marrying her, Tom converted to her faith.
