"Run!" He screamed as the monster tore into his shoulder, blood gushing from the open wound.
I stood there stunned. My body felt like stone as I was unable to do what was asked. My brother looked at me with pleading eyes. It was almost like he was telling me it was ok to leave him.
More of those things tore into his body, and I finally snapped out of my stunned state, my feet took off, and my body went with, and I took off.
It felt like forever before I finally stopped, catching ahold of my breath, looking around, I was in the middle of the woods. My heartbeat slowed, and I finally noticed the salty tears running down my face.
He was gone. The only thing I had left in the world was gone. He would turn into one of those flesh bags and roam the earth until he was killed.
I let out a choking sob and fell to the ground. What was I going to do?
The sun rose the next morning, and everything was quiet. It was like the world was purging its self of the poison.
And it so happens to be, humans were that poison. The world was overpopulated and dying. This is its way of surviving.
I stood, my knees a little shaky from crying. What was I going to do? I know I needed to survive for him. I knew that's what he would've wanted.
I, Rose Stewart, am a survivor.
It took a lot of courage to stand and start walking, but I did it. I couldn't go back into the city, but I needed supplies.
It took hours to get into the city, the buildings were on fire, and those monsters were everywhere. I ran into the first building I saw it was a sporting goods store.
It was quiet. The lights hadn't shut off yet, which was a good thing. I need to travel light, so I could run fast. I'm glad my parents made me do track in high school. It would come in handy nowadays.
I quickly grabbed a black backpack and looked around for anything useful. I grabbed a few flashlights and a bunch of batteries. Most of the stuff that was in the store was gone, which wasn't surprising. It was the end of the world, after all.
I found a first aid kit under the shelf and shoved that in my bag, grabbing a few water bottles and some granola bars.
I then moved to the clothing section. I needed to find something to wear, other than the dress that I had on.
I stripped from my dress, throwing on a gray long sleeve shirt and blue denim washed jeans with holes in the knees. Heels with this outfit looked great, but it wasn't practical. I threw a few clothing items into another bag that I grabbed then moved to the shoe section.
I needed something that would be durable and that I could run in. I grabbed a pair of Nike shoes, stuffing them in the bag, then I found it. Combat boots. I had a some, when I was fifteen, living in the country, it was great. I tried them on, they were a little bit, but it would work.
I moved to where all of the equipment was and looked at what was left. I needed a weapon to defend myself.
A bat? No, I was never good at swinging them.
A hammer? Yes, it would be lightweight and sturdy.
I grabbed it and continued looking. Bingo! I shouted in my head.
A bow. It was the perfect weapon to survive. Sure, I've never killed the monsters before, but I didn't want to die. I grabbed it and grabbed some arrows to go with it.
