The Robes on Billy's Road
Summary:
Tommy grew up on a farm in Samford, Queensland, with his dad, mum and three siblings. He counts himself a very lucky boy to have a typical, loving family who owns farmable land and gets food on the table everyday. But growing up beside Billy Boy, their town's "dirty" child, Tommy has always been met with reproving looks from those around him. Billy was kind, fun and interesting, and they used to play together near the creeks at the back of his home.
However, when Tommy turns seventeen, new faces appear in town and report that the state council is rounding up the Aborigines to be put to good use. Billy can no longer appear in town and becomes Tom's secret. While Billy was once his best friend, Tom knows he's helping Billy for other reasons – illicit reasons – that may ruin his good life. If that isn't bad enough, a pretty Aborigine woman comes into town claiming to be Billy's sister and soon Billy's name is attracting all sort of negative attention. Attention that inevitably lands on Tom.
