"breathe, eat, sleep, wake up, and do it all over again until one day, it's just not as hard anymore" - elena gilbert
Klaus strolled down the streets of Mystic Falls, with a sly smile on his face and a hint of mystery in the way he walked. He felt... infinite. Well, of course. He's a hybrid.
And then, he stopped walking and the smile was wiped off his face within a split second.
It was her.
The girl he couldn't bite. She was sat on a bench, looking quite vulnerable. For a moment, Klaus was intrigued. He wanted to know what she was thinking. He wanted her to tell him everything that was going on in her life that made her look so dreary. She was holding a book in her hand, her face concentrated on the words on the page. "Great Expectations", read the words on the front cover. He smiled, and within realising what he was doing, he stopped. He sighed, annoyed with himself by letting her, someone he's never fully spoken to, sneak her way into his thoughts. He rolled his eyes, and walked over.
Her eyes lifted off the page and up to meet his. She frowned. "Hi." The frown turned to a slight, somewhat friendly, facial expression. Klaus smiled at her. "Hello, love." He said confidently and sat down beside her before crossing his legs and folding his arms in a I-know-I'm-gorgeous way. She looked at him, for a few seconds. Her eyes studying his face. She came to realisation of what she was doing, and laughed nervously. He took the book out of her hand, and read the front cover out loud. "Great Expecations," Klaus said with a smile on his face. "Dickins was a dark man."
She laughed slightly, "And how would you know?"
"Ah, good question. I just... know. Did a project on him in school." Lie. She raised her eyebrows, in a way that looked impressed with the words coming out of his mouth. "What's your name, love?" He asked, faintly smiling.
"Serenity. What's yours?" She said, refusing to make eye contant with him. A shy one, Klaus thought.
"Niklaus. But you can call me Klaus." He said, holding out a hand. She grasped it and shook it. For a second, Klaus swore he almost saw her smile. "Are you happy?" He asked, wanting to know everything about this girl. She looked at him, looking moderately surprised at his outburst. "Um... yes? No. Yes. Of course. Not really. I-I don't know. Why do you ask such an odd question?" She questioned, frowning and tilting her head.
"It's quite a simple question, really. And plus, you intrigue me. I want to know more about you. So... are you happy?" He asked, looking her in the eye.
"Um... I don't... I mean, I'm not sure..." she sighed. "I don't think I know how to be." Serenity said, honestly. This triggered something in Klaus. There was that feeling again, sympathy. I don't even know her, he thought. He felt quite angry with himself, for letting this one girl enter her way into his mind. "Why are you intrigued by me?" She narrowed her eyes, but not in an intimidating way. Not that Klaus could be intimidated. But in more of an... interested way.
"Because teenage girls who sit in the street reading a Charles Dickins novel aren't easy to come across." He said, smiling at her. She faintly laughed, her cheeks flushing red. Who is he? Serenity thought. All I remember is seeing him in the Grill.
And they sat there. For 3 hours. On a bench in Mystic Falls. Just talking. Completely comfortable with each other. She told him how she needed a sign that things are going to change, she told him about her family, her life without hope. He told her about the sights he'd seen, the people he'd met, the hope a pretty young girl like her will find sooner or later.

The next day, Serenity woke up happy. She talked to someone, for 3 hours. A charming, beautiful man. And she liked it.
Klaus woke up feeling self defeated. He couldn't forgive himself for the fact he could potentially be falling for a human. A human he spoke to for only 3 hours. A pretty, self destructive girl. He didn't like it.
