Narrator's POV:

Draco sat at the Slytherin table. He wasn't paying attention to anyone. It was like he was in his own world and no one noticed. Well, most didn't notice. His girlfriend noticed. She gazed at him from her seat at the Y/H table. They'd been dating for almost a year now. Why was Draco being so distant?

She sighed sadly and continued picking at the food on her plate. In the beginning of the year--about three months ago--he would still be by her side and still talk to her. Now it's as if he doesn't even know her.

The boy didn't want to hurt her by ignoring her. Actually, he thought he'd be protecting her. From the dark lord...and him. Draco didn't want this. He wanted a normal year six at Hogwarts. He wanted to graduate and then finally get married to Y/N and start a family of their own. One that wasn't what his father wanted for him. One with a happy childhood for his children.

He sadly hung his head and zoned out again. What was pushing Y/N away going to do? What if she didn't survive the war he knew was to come? His dreams would all vanish into vapor, merely hanging in the air to taunt him and his bad choices...rather his father's choices for him.

Draco stood and walked out of the Great Hall--a place that was once filled with joy and happiness for him was nothing but a hall for all his fears. Once Draco was far away from the hall, he broke down in tears as he leaned against a wall. Draco yanked at his hair in frustration which was neatly gelled in place. Now, it was a complete mess, sticking up in random places.

Meanwhile, Y/N noticed that Draco had left the Great Hall and into a corridor. Wanting to know the source of the boy's strange behavior, she followed. He was her boyfriend anyway. Y/N wandered about, not knowing where to find the owner of the platinum hair she loved.

When she neared a corner, she could hear sobs and someone muttering to themselves. Draco?

She rounded the corner and there stood her boyfriend leaning against a wall as he cried. "Draco? What's going on?" She whispered as Draco's head snapped up and he attempted to wipe his tears.

"Nothing, Y/N. Go back to the Great Hall. Eat dinner." He snapped. Draco didn't want to yell at her at all.

She didn't go away. In fact, Y/N stepped closer and placed a hand on his shoulder. "Draco, please. Tell me what's going on. You were there for me when I needed someone. It seems you need someone to talk to now." Her voice was gentle and Draco wanted to grab her and cry for hours. But he couldn't.

So Draco pushed her away. He didn't want to be harsh, but he pushed her so hard she fell. "Why can't you tell me what's bothering you, Draco? Am I not good enough?" Her voice cracked and Draco's heart shattered. "For all this time, I thought that maybe, just maybe, you'll turn back into the Draco Malfoy that I fell in love with...I guess not." She started walking off and Draco knew he better do something--anything to let her know that he still loves her deeply.

"Wait! I'll tell you...just promise me you'll stay away from me once I tell you..." Y/N turned to meet Draco's eyes.

"Draco, I told you I'll be here for you no matter what." He sighed and then looked away from her to check and make sure that they are alone. He pulled his sleeve up slowly. He looked up at her once the dark mark was fully revealed. She gasped.

"See, you're scared of me!" He exclaimed.

"No, no Draco. I'm not scared of you." She stepped closer and he moved back.

"Stay away from me...I only stayed away to protect you. If they find out how much I love you, they'll kill you." His eyes shone with tears. "I'm a monster..." Draco's voice was barely above a whisper.

"No Draco. You're not." Y/N reached out to cup his cheek but he flinched.

"Stop. I don't want you to get hurt!" Draco backed away, but Y/N quickly embraced him in a tight hug.

Even though Draco didn't want to be too much of a burden on her, he broke down in tears and took in the comfort of the hug. "It's okay Draco. I'm here." She murmured to him as her hands rubbed up and down his back in an attempt to stop the sobs and hiccups escaping his lips.

Once he had finally calmed down, she pulled away. "I'm sorry...for distancing myself from you. I thought if I did, you'd get fed up and break up with me. I thought that was the only way I'd be able to keep you safe." Y/N's heart melted at how sweet her boyfriend is. Even though it hurt him, he did everything he could to protect her.

"It's alright Draco. It's just that I couldn't help but think that you found someone better. Someone prettier, sm--" He cut her off with a passionate kiss.

"Darling, how could I find someone better when I have the best of the best right here?" He leaned forward, letting his forehead touch hers. "I love you." He murmured and wrapped his arms tighter around her. "And I won't let anyone hurt you."

She smiled. "Now that's the Draco I know." Y/N stood up on her toes and pressed a kiss against his forehead and then ran her fingers through his hair, attempting to place it back in it's neat state. "And I love you too." A smile appeared on Draco's lips, something she hadn't seen in a while.
