Eden leaps forward.

"Stop it Matthias, that's not nice!

-What, I'm just stating the facts! They could have left a few people in his service and kept up appearances! It's not like he's badly injured, is he?"

In the surrounding area, the discussions had died down: everyone was waiting for the response of the two Esmerides. The little redhead panicked, his eyes shifting from Louis' furious air to Daniel's impassive look. What could he do? He never thought he would behave like this, especially not in front of these people. He stepped forward, ready to make another attempt, when Daniel stopped him. Standing in front of his brother, he smiled at Matthias:

"You're right: they should have let me handle it alone.

-Danny, um. . .

-Hold on, big brother, I have to settle this first. ( to Matthias) If you think that, then you may not know that my family cares about me very much and that this has been a horrible time for them. If you cared a little bit about your name, you'd be a little smarter and keep your mouth shut. You know that one word from my father will cause a lot of problems for your family. "

Then, bowing his head,

"But you wouldn't want that, would you?"

The tall blond guy blushed and lowered his head, but didn't say anything. He didn't seem to have thought about it. His little brother and the girl looked at Dan with shock, whose head Louis stroked with pride, all traces of anger gone, before announcing:

"This being settled, we will now join our parents. Enjoy the party. "

He took his brother in his arms and walked to the main chairs. Their father was alone, chatting with a tall lady whose eyes were as blue as her hair (and her puffy dress).

"Daddy, when do we open presents? Dan asked as he touched the earth.

-In a few minutes. What? You want to open them now?

-Yes. "

Opening your presents = three quarters of an hour before the end of the party. A subtle way of saying he wanted to go home presto. Turning to the lady, the Duke smiled apologetically:

"Lady Alvers, it seems my son is in a hurry to see his presents. . .

-I understand. In that case, I hope you'll like them!"

She showed a big smile at Dan who, feeling too tired to answer, nodded and buried his head in Louis' suit. Their mother materialized on their right and retrieved her half-empty glass to tap it with her spoon.

"Well, everyone. My youngest son is getting impatient, so I think we can finally get to the moment we've all been waiting for: the opening of the presents!"
