Chapter 31 (Edited)

Thomas and I arrived at the village shortly after. Since it was already the evening, we decided to stay at the inn we ate before.

When I knocked at the door, the old lady opened up, and after a surprised look, she curtsied with large smile. "Good evening, your Highness, my lady. You came back, I see!"

I smiled at her and replied, "Yes, we need a place to sleep tonight."

"Of course, please come in!", she opened the door wider and stepped aside, then yelled, "Robbie!! Come get the horses of his Highness!"

We heard something crash in the background, and a sleepy Robert came strutting in soon after. "Grandma," he groaned tiredly, "I was taking nap."

I hid my amused laugh behind my hand. He suddenly noticed that he and his grandma weren't alone, and bowed nonchalantly, murmuring "Your Highness," and yawning right after. "So, the horses?", he questioned to nobody in particular.

The old lady frowned at his obvious non-interest, and scolded him, "Hurry up! We don't have all day, Robbie!"

"Don't call me that," he grumbled, while walking towards Thomas, who was holding the horses, taking the reins and leading them to the stable.

When we entered, I saw that we were the only guests tonight. "I'll make you dinner," the old lady said with a warm smile, "The bedrooms are upstairs, you can choose any of them. Please make yourself at home."

After she left, I turned and looked at Thomas. "Let's go to our rooms," I suggested, and he nodded.

Upstairs, I looked at all the rooms and obviously chose the biggest one. Thomas shook his head at me smiling, but said nothing, and walking in the room beside mine.

But first I went to the bathroom, that included a shower place with a bucket already filled with lukewarm water. I headed straight towards it, as I was currently badly in need of a shower.

Ah... what a relief to be clean again, I thought after I finished washing myself, and went to my bedroom.

The room was a typical inn bedroom, with a bed, a closet, a small table and a chair. I fell on the bed and let my aching body relax. I had never ridden so much in my life, and after a while, it could become very tiring. I sighed peacefully. Thank God I'm sleeping in a real bed tonight.

A door gently creaking woke me up. "Anna?"

I opened my eyes and sat up lazily, to find Thomas leaning on the doorway with an amused smirk. "What?"

"You have a bit of drool on your mouth," he said and chuckled lowly.

"What?", I hastily wiped my mouth, and arranged my messy hair, feeling warmth creep up to my cheeks. Not quite succeeding in that task, I turned back to Thomas, and teasingly raised an eyebrow, "What would you have done if I had been indecent?"

"Ah- uhm...I mean, I would have left...", he stammered over his words, his cheeks reddening, before he shook his head and regarded me with narrowed eyes when he saw the smirk on my face. "Come on, dinner's ready," he told me and I laughed quietly as we descended the stairs to the still empty eating room. I noticed him smelling like the soap of the bathroom and deduced that he must have showered while I was sleeping. I inwardly shook my head amusedly. Both of us had certainly needed that shower.

The old lady had just finished setting up our table, and as we sat down, she curtsied and wished us a good meal. The warm soup she made tasted blissful after the load of sandwiches we had eaten.
