the moon

once told me

I don't have to

be bright

to light up the night

with my glow

the moon

once told me

that she taught

the stars themselves

to shine

when they were

burning out—

she told them stories

of loneliness

and love lost

and how her tears

painted pale moonlight

across the sky

one night

and how I

can turn my pain

into paint,

how the world

is a canvas

waiting to be painted over,

waiting to be blended,

loved,

and it will be forever

in progress

the moon

once told me

that I'm whole

even when I look

less than half,

even when

the sun

outshines me

the moon

once told me

that I shouldn't

be afraid of the night

as long

as I have

a light to guide me

through the shadows
