i've never heard a laugh
such as yours before,
dangling like a star
brightly burning at my fingertips,
holding a wish long forgotten
but still deeply longed for;
piercing the air so sharply,
yet so warmly,
like a flame being struck
against the night,
and somehow that gasping of air,
that taste of unbridled unity
settling against our lungs
as we laugh together,
is something i'll always miss,
even when i'm still living
in this perfect harmony
of a dissonant, hiccuping melody,
a mashed up medley of jokes swept aside
to make room to giggle and double over—
this moment i'm living, i will miss,
because laughing never lasts,
always halting a second too short,
lingering only in the flush of our cheeks
and the warmth of our hands
brushing against each others;
your charcoal-smeared fingertips
fumbling with my seeking, searching ones
that have finally stopped wandering
and now rest delicately intertwined
with the hands of you,
an artist,
who knows the masterpiece
within herself
as well as she knows
the nub of her pencil,
or the lilt of my laugh,
yet an artist's heart loves
to jump
from piece to piece,
painting to mural to sketch,
and i just hope
i'll always be unfinished,
incomplete,
i'll always have cracks
for you to fill in with
a mourning violet hue,
or a mystic, burning blue,
so that i'll always be
your work
unfinished
and
evolving,
something that always needs
some laughter
and if you can spare it—
some loving
