last summer

when the sunrise

turned our eyes

into warm pools

of honey

when the sky

was an expanse

of endless

baby blue

that darkened

into an alive azure

where it met

the ocean

on the horizon

i curled my toes

in the sparkling sand

that's just out of reach

of the tide's

wanting, wistful

fingers

i let my dark hair

tangle

when the wind

tried to braid it

i gazed into

the sun's

burning flares

that reach out

to hold the clouds

aloft

on fire

and i felt

whole

for a moment

as if i've been

stitched back together

with sea salt

and sunshine

yet when night came

i slept on the shores

of my sadness

and fell apart

after holding myself

together

too tightly

my heart

tense and tired

and the warmth

the remnants

of the sun

on my skin

has cooled

the fragments

of my shattered soul

are sharp-edged

like glass in the sand

and the desolation

i've pushed away

during the day

washes over me in waves

and i let the foaming tide

sweep away

my sand heart
