When Rizal went home from Europe for the first time, he started to work a civic purpose in Calamba. He established a medical clinic. His first exploit as a physician was the successful operation on his mother's failing eyes. With his surgical skill acquired in the best eye clinics to Europe, he removed a double cataract from mother Teodora. News of the successful operation spread far and wide. To the masses,the restoration of the sight of Rizal's mother was a miracle. Patients from Manila and some provinces flocked to Calamba. Rizal came to be called "Doctor Uliman" because he came from Germany. Uliman means German. Rizal was so busy. His professional fees were reasonable, even gratis (no charge or free) to the poor. Within a few months, he was ale to earn $900 as a physician.
