In the last day (December 29, 1896) before the execution of Rizal, in one of his rare free moments after lunch, Rizal wrote a last farewell letter to his German bestfriend and confindante, Ferdinand Blumentritt. It was also the last dramatic short letter, showing his full innocence and clear conscience. Convicted of rebellion, sedition, and conspiracy by the Spanish colonial government.

While the National Library of the Philippines has the majority of the correspondence between Rizal and Ferdinand Blumentritt, some of it was kept by Blumentritt when he sold the collection to the government prior to World War 2. According to the Filipino historian, Ambeth Ocampo, Rizal's final letter to Blumentritt, which was sent from Fort Santiago on December 29, 1896, is one of the important records kept in the former Budweis, now known as the Czech Republic's Budjovice Archives.

My dear Brother,

When you receive this letter, I shall be dead.Tomorrow at seven, I shall be shot; but I am innocent of the crime of rebellion. I die with a tranquil conscience. Farewell, my best, my dearest friend, and never think ill of me!

Jose Rizal

Regards to the whole family, to Sra. Rosa, Loleng, Conradito, and Frederico.

on the margin Rizal wrote: "I leave a book for you as a souvenir."

The title of that book and its current whereabouts are unknown. When Blumentritt received the letter, he wept all the day for his bestfriend Rizal.
