Antonio Luna began to fascinate with Nellie Boustead and courted her in many ways. But he failed to win Nellie's affection. Luna became intoxicated at the social gathering of Filipino expatriates in Madrid (August 1890) which Rizal attended.

He blamed Rizal for his love failures to Nellie, then commented silly and nasty about Nellie. Rizal irritated because of his high value to women and believed they were equal to men obviously. As a result of this, Rizal, the pistoleer, challenged Luna, the swordsman, to a duel--an uneven fight would be happen! Luna accepted the challenge and scheduled their duel. The Filipino expatriates there tried to calm down the two reformists and awared that they have mission and struggle for the Filipinos.

Until Luna realized of what happened after drunken. He asked for Rizal's forgiveness. Rizal accepted the apology and no duel to be happen. They were good friends actually.
