Valentine

Didn't know where else to post this 🤷🏻‍♀️

"Will you be my valentine?"
I chortle as I ask away.
I see her smiling just the same,
Hands fidget the sweat-shirt grey.
The blush of cheeks identical,
We simulate Christmas holiday.
Plenty more references run my mind,
I'll recite them all someday.

I raise my hand, put it on the concrete
And watch her do the same
This glass that won't let me touch her
But no one but me to blame.
She smiles brighter when our palms align
Oh dear, are her eyes aflame.
She crinkles her nose at the silly question,
But nods back through the frame.

"Why 'me'?" She asks shaking the head
Oh where do I even begin?
"You get me the most" is all i say
Again then I start to grin
She likes the answer, I can tell
When a colour blooms her skin.
"I know" she says we laugh together
How ridiculous is this whim.

My mom peeks in, the voice she heard
Worried, asks me if I'm fine?
"Never better." I turn from the mirror
"I'm making myself my valentine."
