Ponyboy's POV

I heard Sodapop get punished dozens of times before, by our dad, and now by Darry. Though no matter how many times I hear it, it never gets any easier to listen to. Especially not today when it sounded like Soda was being murdered! I never heard him scream like that before. It was driving me crazy and I just couldn't take it any longer.

I could have gone out the front door, but I didn't want to take the chance of Darry hearing me, so I opened my bedroom window and jumped out. The window wasn't high considering it was on the first floor so getting out wasn't an issue.

I ran down the block, not really knowing where I was running to but I ended up at Johnny's house. Everyone knew how awful his parents were, so no one would ever knock on his front door. Instead, we knocked on his bedroom window ever so gently.

Almost immediately, the window opened and Johnny stuck his head out. "Hey Pony." He looked around and then his eyes went wide. "What are you doing all by yourself?" He asked.

"I'm guessing you heard what's happening?" I dodged his question.

"Yeah, a few of the guys stopped by earlier, filled me in." Johnny stepped back and opened the window fully. "Now get in here."

"Your folks home?" I asked as I crawled through the window.

"No, my ma went out for drinks last night, she's probably on the floor of a bar somewhere. And my old man's at work." Johnny shut the window and locked it. "You didn't answer me, why are you out by yourself?" He raised his eyebrows as I sat on his bed and pulled my knees in. "Pony?" His voice went real soft. "What happened?"

I shrugged and left my chest tightened as I tried to keep myself from crying. "I just couldn't take it." I muttered.

Johnny sat next to me and wrapped his arms around me. "Couldn't take what?"

"Darry I guess." I shrugged again. "He's real mad at Soda for fighting Curly, and they were yelling, and there was a really loud bang, and Soda was screaming so loud-" I cut myself off with uncontrollable hiccups. I felt my eyes fill with tears and Johnny hugged me tight.

"Darry wasn't hitting Soda was he?" Johnny's voice was shaky.

None of us had good father's, they were either dead, left, or abusive drunks. We all looked to Darry as a kinda father figure type, and the thought of him turning into the typical greaser dad scared us all to death.

"No, not exactly." I flushed and hid my face.

"What's that supposed to mean?" Johnny asked but I didn't answer. "Ponyboy, talk to me, please."

I looked at Johnny, and actually considered telling him. I knew he wouldn't judge or tell anyone, but being able to say the words seemed impossible. "You can't tell anyone." I muttered.

"Sure thing." Johnny sat up straight like I was about to tell him the juiciest gossip.

"You see, when Darry gets mad at me or Soda, he well." My mouth went dry and suddenly I couldn't make a real sentence. "In order to, um, you know. He, well he..."

"Spanks you?" Johnny said what I couldn't.

My head shot up and I looked at him with wide eyes. Johnny didn't look surprised, nor did he laugh or even grin. "You knew?" I gasped.

"Yeah?" He acted like I just asked him if he knew the sky was blue. "It's kinda obvious." He shrugged. "Whenever you or Soda get into big trouble you're always real fidgety for a few days, and wince when you sit down."
