Ponyboy's POV

When I woke up the next morning, Soda was already out of bed, and I could hear the sound morning chatter from the kitchen. I walked out my room and to the Kitchen where Darry was making pancakes and Soda was sitting at the table. They were talking about last night's baseball game and a bad call that was made.

Darry looked over at me and smiled. "Morning Pony."

Soda looked at me, but didn't say anything. "Morning," I said back, trying my best not to give any indication that something was wrong.

"Made pancakes, you hungry?" Darry asked as he placed a plate in front of my seat.

"Starving." I sat down and began eating. Darry sat down and him and Soda went back to their previous discussion.

Through breakfast Sodapop wouldn't even look at me. I don't think Darry noticed, because I kept a small smile on my face the whole time. Though it hurt knowing that Soda was still mad at me. I just hoped he would get over it soon.

"What are your plans for today?" Darry asked us both.

"I have work unit two. Then me and Steve are gunna hang or somthin'" Soda shrugged.

"Me and Johnny are going down by the tracks." I told Darry.

"You be careful of those trains." Darry told me.

"Of course." I lied again. There was no way we weren't going to hop a few trains.  Soda knew that, so he rolled his eyes and stuffed his face with pancakes. "Something you wanna say Soda?" I Looked over at him. I knew he wasn't going to say anything. I've seen Soda riding trains dozens of times.

Darry looked over at Soda, then back at me. I was pretty sure he felt the tension in the room. "Just be careful." Soda shook his head.

Darry looked down at his watch, then stood up fast. "I got to go." He slipped his boots on and headed for the door. "Pony, dishes." He pointed at me.

"Yep." I nodded and watched him leave. I turned towards Soda, though he was already halfway down the hallway.

I sighed and began cleaning up breakfast.

While I was cleaning up, Soda walked past me in his DX shirt and hair greased back. He grabbed beer from the fridge and took a swig of it. He took the beer and went back into our room. I shrugged and grabbed a beer for myself. I took a few sips and continued to clean the dishes. Soda came back into the kitchen with a blue baseball cap on and saw him with a beer by my side. "Hey dimwit!" Soda yelled as snagged the beer away from me. "You can't be drinking. Do you know what Darry would do? He would whip you a new one." Soda threw the beer into the fridge and slammed the door shut.

"But you-" I started to complain but I was interrupted by a car horn from outside.

"Steve is here." Soda grabbed his beer and  made his way out the door. "Stay out of trouble." Soda yelled at me.

I didn't say anything back. I just rolled my eyes and finished the dishes.

Johnny and I walked on the railroad tracks, balancing on the rails. "He's not normally this annoying. I don't know what's gotten into him." I complained to Johnny about my big brother.

"He's probably just worried about you." Johnny suggested.

 "Yeah right." I scoffed.

"I still can't believe you didn't get in trouble last night." Johnny laughed a little. "I thought Darry was going to see right through you."
