All the girls live in the same town. They might know each other, they might not. Eventually they will. No plane crash. No island. No Dawn of Eve. Just a town and a high school. A "normal" teenager life. However, don't expect it to be boring. Because as Leah said: "Being a teenage girl in normal ass America, that was the real living hell."
FYI:
At the end of every chapter is a song line fitting to what has happened. It is not conclusively a song, the character would listen to, just one that's suitable for the chapter. Most of them are songs I personally listen/listened to. Also you should know that the lines are pulled out of context, which is why just the lines refer to the chapter not the whole song.
