It had been a rather uneventful night, and Flip was more than ok with that. He was thankful that it hadn't been plagued with night terrors. The little bit that still happened tore at his heart, as he had listened to her whine and grab for him like he wasn't there. He couldn't help but feel guilty or think that she subconsciously hated him. Maybe it was a good thing she didn't remember everything.Flip's phone buzzing in his pocket woke him from his light slumber. He carefully pulled it out and opened it to see a text from Ron.
Just checking in. Wanted to let you know that Ronnie and I checked all the tapes. They were tampered with. Call me when you're able and I'll tell you all about it.
Flip closed his phone with an audible sigh. He knew he needed to call Ron and Zoey at some point. He slowly untangled himself from Kelsey's sleeping frame and proceeded to step outside the hospital room doors, checking back behind him just once to make sure he hadn't woken her. When he was sure she wouldn't wake he dialed Ron.
"Hello?" a sleepy voice answered.
"Hey, Ron." Flip replied.
"Flip. Hey, how is everything?" Ron said sounding a bit more awake.
"She's sleeping. Has been on and off for a while now. I'm hoping to take her home today but we have to wait for the Dr. to do rounds."
"Well if she's up for it maybe I'll stop by and say 'hi. Take her mind off of things."
"Yeah, I'm sure she would love that." Flip said a bit more enthused, pacing in front of the hospital room door, "So the tapes are worthless?"
"I'm so sorry, Flip. Someone looped them."
"Goddammit!"
"Ronnie is doing what he can to see if he might be able to fix it, but it's not looking good."
"It has to be someone in the department. I swear to God if it's fucking Landers I'm going to kill him!" And that's when the memories from yesterday crossed his mind. 'Her injuries are consistent with a victim who fought her attacker'. That was it. "Ron. She fought back. If it is Landers that did this he's going to have marks. Scratches, bruises,...something."
"I'll keep my eyes open. To be honest, though, he's been here working and I haven't seen anything out of place. Has she remembered anything?"
Flip brought his hand to his head, "Not really. She said last night she could see his face but she never said a name."
"It's a start. Give it some time and maybe it will come back to her."
"Part of me hopes it won't. It would be like reliving it all over for her."
"She's tougher than you give her credit for, and she has you to help her. You're gonna get through this mess together."
"Thanks, man. I gotta call Zoey. I should have done it last night but that didn't happen."
"No problem. I'll be in touch and maybe I'll see you later."
"Ok. Sounds good. See ya."
Flip hung up and immediately dialed Zoey. On the third ring, he heard her pick up.
"Good Morning," she said in a chipper voice.
"Hey." Flip gave a small laugh. "How's the little man?"
"He is great. We are currently enjoying some bacon and eggs. How's our girl?"
Flip peaked through the window to Kelsey's room, "Still sleeping. Probably will for a while. She didn't seem to have any nightmares but I can imagine the concussion she's got is gonna kick her ass."
