Heartbeat

Beep beep. Beep beep. Beep beep.

The steady almost reassuring sound of the heart moniter echoes like the sweet sound of music in my ears in the background as her raspy breathing sings it's last verse. The smell of sweat and cleaning products burn my nose as my eyes sting and the taste of salt drips slowly onto my dry and cracked lips.

My face is hot and damp my hands uncontrollably shaking as dread settles itself deep in my stomach like a dark cold and heavy stone as the steady beat of her heart slows down and the music wails off pitch.

Beep ----------- beep. Beep ----------- beep. Beep ---------------------------- beep.

Her pale blue lips pry open and her sunken grey eyelids flutter for half a second. Hope? Her lips stumble as they attempt to form words.

"Goodbye my little sparrow."

Beep......................

My howl of pain is completely silent under the bellowed screech of death that tears us apart and shatters what love hope and happiness I had left in my locked up heart.

Soldiers in blue uniforms rush in and pull me away as my howl continues in its desperate attempt to be heard.

I grab a scalpel and slice away what's left of my soul watching it spill away in a river of thick ruby red and amongst the confusion, the soldiers turn to me one by one, standing to attention as they rushed to attend to me.

No one noticed the shadow in the corner as I collapsed and died. It had a long scythe in a large skeletal hand, two dull dead orbs hovering over the other as it added to its collection of souls. A long weather-worn hood and robe that lay to the floor hung tattered off the slender body.

No one noticed as it smiled and slid out, searching for its next victim.
