The blasting sound of sirens and muffled talking filled her ears as she began to regain consciousness. Pinx attempted to open her eyes, only to scrunch them back together when the bright light from above shone directly down onto her.

She lifted her arms to her back and sat up slightly to help with the adjustment. She heard a loud gasp from beside her and looked towards its source.
"Are you alright? What happened? How do you feel?" Maxis bombarded her with questions but was quieted when the attendant waved a hand.

"Let's calm down. She just woke up. One question at a time. How do you feel?"
"Uh, I feel kinda dizzy and my head is pounding. Uh, I'm sorry, where am I?"
"Right now you are in an ambulance. You passed out."
"Right, right. Wait, Oh my Gosh! Your Leg!" She gestured to Maxis' leg.
"I'm fine. That's been fixed. You're the one who passed out."
"You have a serious burn that you said nothing about for like 20 minutes!"
"As I said, I'm fine. You Passed Out."
"For like, what, 10 minutes? Yours is more serious!"
"Neither of you is Fine," the paramedic loudly interjected. "Your burn is not fixed, and you could have brain damage from the smoke! I understand that both of you are concerned about your partner, but you both need to be quiet so I can do my job!"

Stunned, they both paused for a moment. But then both started saying how they weren't together. But they were quickly silenced as the paramedic raised a hand again.
"I don't care. Now if you'll let me, I'm going to ask both of you a couple questions."
The rest of the ride to the hospital was silent, other than the occasional question with a followed answer.

They finally pulled up to the hospital. The paramedic stood and opened the doors as well as released the ramp to wheel off Pinx's bed. They started pushing it off but Pinx tried to stop them.
"I can walk, it doesn't hurt that much and I'm not even the one with the bad leg." However, the paramedic insisted.
"From what you told me in the ambulance it's best if you stay lying down.  With the head injury sustained prior, all the walking and jumping around and the smoke, you could be seriously injured. I wouldn't be surprised if you had a concussion."

This seemed to get through to Pinx as she laid back down and let the paramedic wheel her into the hospital. Maxis followed close behind. The paramedic had stopped before the front counter. They had an exchange with someone at the front desk before proceeding further into the hospital and into an elevator.

Once they had reached the room they, or at least Pinx would be staying in, the paramedic turned to someone in a light blue coat.
"Hello doctor, these are two patients from the Akribus fire." They held out the charts with the information they asked for in the ambulance.
"Here's their information." The doctor took the charts and thanked the paramedic. They nodded a professional goodbye to one another and the paramedic left the room.

After they were both settled into hospital beds and the doctor had left to run some tests they sat in silence in the room. The lights were left dim to aid the healing process of Pinx's head.

Maxis couldn't help but wonder what started the fire. The pixie might have, but then again pixies usually go right for the kill.  They have never been known to set fires before. They figured there was no use worrying about it now, it wouldn't change anything.  Besides, the fire department will probably find the cause when they investigate.

"Oh My Gods," Pinx muttered while staring off blankly.
"What? What is it? Is your head hurting? Should I turn the lights down more? Should I get the doctor?" Maxis smothered the girl with worried questions.
"No, no. I don't want you to put pressure on your leg. I was just so preoccupied with getting out of the building, I didn't even think about it. All my stuff is gone. All my books, clothes, pictures... Everything. And I can never get it back." Pinx's eyes watered almost unnoticeably, but Maxis noticed.  They were filled with sympathy for the human.

"Hey, it'll be okay." Pinx looked up at them, the tears were now forming more noticeably and her voice started to become more upset.
"No, it won't." Maxis didn't know what they could say. They didn't live on campus so they didn't bring many personal belongings with them. All they lost was some papers and a plaque. But Pinx- and everyone who lives on the campus lost their homes.

"Hey, Mx. Forast?" Pinx spoke still without turning her head. Maxis couldn't help but laugh a little.
"I think we're a little past 'Mx. Forast', you can call me Maxis."
"Oh okay then." she was now turned towards them. She hesitated slightly before continuing, "Maxis, you said that when we escaped you would tell me about that guy who was in the tunnels under the school."
Maxis stared forward a little blankly.

Glancing down to their feet, they replied, "I guess I did, didn't I. So I guess the story starts around year 601. It was maybe a week after my roommates showed me the passage. I was heading back to my room and as I came down the staircase to my floor, I met Him.

Maxis merrily ran down the spiral staircase, making sure not to trip on the rickety steps. As they stepped down onto the final, they felt their shoelaces catch under the green shoes they were wearing and began their descent to the ground.

A swift pair of hands placed themselves under their arms to catch them. Maxis looked up to see someone with short brown hair that was gelled up to create a slight mullet effect. Deep brown eyes looked back at them.

"And who might you be?"
Swiftly standing up they said, "I'm so sorry. I wasn't being careful, and-"
"Woah, woah, woah. Slow your roll. I wasn't asking you to apologize, I just asked for your name," the stranger said, with a slight smirk on their face.

"Oh, um, Maxis Forast. They/them. And you?"
"Gethin Pendry. He/him." He floated back a bit, wait a minute. Floated? It was at this point Maxis noticed that he wasn't touching the ground.
"Um, why-"
"Am I floating? I'm a ghost," he interjected.

"Oh. Well I'm sorry you died. Now if you'll excuse me I have to get back to my dorm."
"Ah, so you're one of the bigshot hunters in training, aren't you."
"Um, yes. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go ba-"
"Word for the wise. Don't go down to the basement."
And with that Gethin vanished.
