Ciel could remember it clear as day. He had been nine at the time. He had just woken from a nightmare in the middle of a thunderstorm. He sat curled up in his bed, shaking as the thunder and lightning crashed outside his bedroom window. He looked over to his older brother's bed. His twin was snoring quietly in his bed, curled around his blanket and sucking his thumb. The thunder roared again, and the lightning lit up the countryside. Ciel felt his lower lip wobble and leapt from his bed and ran out of the room, his bare feet making small thumps as he ran down the hall. His feet pitter pattered to his parents room. He gently pushed open the door, sniffling as he did. "M-mother? Father?" His parents stirred at his whimpering. "Oh? What's wrong, baby?" Rachel Phantomhive murmured to him sleepily, "Is something wrong?" Ciel sniffed. "The rain. The storm... It's scary..." Rachel Phantomhive smiled warmly at him and opened her arms, "Come here, my little darling." Ciel ran over to his mother and jumped into her open arms, hugging her tightly. Vincent Phantomhive smiled at him and reached over to ruffle his hair, "It's alright, son. You're alright." Ciel sniffed, "But it's so scary..." Vincent chuckled, "It is just a storm my son, it will pass. You need not worry." He pulled the boy under his arm and held him close. "Come now, it's alright. Go to sleep, my son." Ciel curled in between his parents and closed his eyes as they held him close. His father's arm wrapped around him and his mother, and his other arm reaching across them in a nice warm hug that encompassed them all.

The next morning, Ciel awoke in his parents bedroom. His twin brother came running in. "Brother! Brother! Come on! Come on! Mother and father have a present for us downstairs! They wanted me to wait for you to wake up. Now let's go!" Ciel gasped as his older brother yanked him from the bed and dragged him downstairs. The two boys ran into the dining room and were bouncing up and down before their father eagerly. "Where's our present, father?!" Ciel's brother cried, "Brother is awake!" Vincent Phantomhive and Rachel Phantomhive shared an amused look. Vincent stood and took each of his son's by the hand. "Well, your present is just in the other room, boys. See?" He lead them into the other room and nodded to Tanaka who brought in a rather large box, setting it down in front of the two twins. The boys swarmed it,

"What do you think it is?!"

"A new train set?!"

"New toys?!"

"Bark!"

"A puppy?!"

The boys stared at the little black puppy in the box. Vincent Phantomhive smiled fondly at his son's, watching as they began to play with their new present on the floor. "He's a Borzoi." Ciel looked up confused, "A what?" Vincent hummed, bending down to pat the small puppy on the head as it passed him. "Err, Russian Wolfhound. He's going to protect you when all else fails. But most importantly, he's going to be your best friend." He watched as Ciel was tackled by the small puppy, who then proceeded to give the boy kisses, making him laugh. (Real) Ciel was by his father now, having tired of the puppy in favor of going to find out what the day's schedule was before being ushered to his room to dress. (Our) Ciel was still playing with the puppy. Vincent bent down on one knee, "What do you think, son? Want to give the little guy a name?" Ciel paused and thought for a moment, then picked up the puppy in his arms, deep in thought as the small puppy wagged it's tail and gazed at him with warm eyes. "Hmm...." The boy murmured, his brow furrowed. Then his eyes brightened. "Sebastian." He said, "His name is, Sebastian."

A few months later, Ciel watched his parents and older brother leave for a party, keeping a smile on his face until they left. Then he frowned, a dejected look crossing his face. He walked through the halls of the manor sadly. Then, he was tackled by Sebastian who began to lick his face. Ciel giggled, smiling happily, "Sebastian! Stop it!" The dog loomed over him and gave a small bark, before being pulled off by Tanaka. "Sebastian. Go lay down." The steward ordered. The dog whimpered and tucked his tail between his legs before wandering off. Ciel frowned and looked at Tanaka who helped him up, "Young master, come along. Let's get you ready for bed." Ciel sighed and followed after him, slouched over, only to be whacked on the back, "Back straight. Head up. Walk like a gentleman." Ciel obeyed and walked to his shared bedroom with his older brother and climbed into bed, quiet as Tanaka was tucking him in. "Sweet dreams, young master." Tanaka said, leaving the boy in his room. Ciel laid in his bed, unmoving. He hated this. He hated that his big brother and parents got to have so much fun. All while he sat at home, indoors, where his asthma could be kept in check. The young boy sniffled in the darkness of his bedroom, a single tear running down his face and splashing onto his knee. There was a sudden weight on the bed, and he looked up. Sebastian was sitting at the edge of his bed, whimpering and wagging his tail. Ciel sniffled again and reached out to pet the dog. Sebastian in turn padded forward and licked his salty tears away with his canine tongue. Ciel giggled a bit at the strange sensation. "Sebastian!" The dog gave a soft bark and curled up next to the young master with a small huff. Ciel yawned and wrapped an arm around the dog, curling up beside it. "Goodnight... Sebastian...."
