Chapter Fifty-three: "You're everything to me."

My Gun by Tove Lo
__________Throughout the night, I introduced Natalie to my friends and family. It was difficult for me to do so considering there was no actual title of what she was to me. Sure she was my girlfriend, but she was so much more than that. She was my best friend, my home, my motivation, my life. Of course I didn't introduce her that way, but it took a lot of restraint not to go on and on about how much I loved her.
Somehow we ended up separating. I was speaking with my grandfather while she was in the kitchen with my mom and one of my aunts cleaning up the remnants from dinner. I insisted on helping, but they told me to go away. I shrugged and decided to spare the argument.
"That's a nice girl you've got, there," my grandpa smiled from across the table. His cheeks were red and shining as they always were considering he was a genuinely happy person.
The corners of my lips pulled upwards, the tip of my index finger running up and down the side of my coffee mug. My entire body grew warm, but that was normal. Any time someone mentioned Natalie in the slightest, an indescribable sense of happiness overcame me. Every time.
"It's funny," he leaned back in his chair. "I noticed the bracelet I gave you on her wrist."
I moved my eyes up to him, scrunching my eyebrows. "You're not mad, are you?"
He shook his head. "No, no! Absolutely not. I was going to say that I thought it was funny because your grandmother gave it to me before we got married. And I gave it to you so that you could either keep it or give it to somebody you love."
And I did, I thought. I gave it to Natalie and I love her so, so much.
"What are the odds of that?" I laughed at the irony. My eyes trailed over to the other side of the room, noticing Mark speaking with my uncle- the police officer. I wanted to laugh at that too, remembering that I figured they would get along well.
Three of my younger cousins were sitting by the television, watching one of those New Year's Eve live shows. They were singing along to all of the songs and laughing about God knows what. My grandma was sitting on the couch, wondering who half of the people performing were. The entire vibe of the room was more than warming. It was entirely inviting and it was impossible not to be happy. Everything was fine.
Everything is fine.
After talking to my grandpa a little longer, I found myself getting up and heading to the kitchen once I saw my aunt leave. From the entrance, I saw Natalie smiling and laughing with my mom by the sink. It was something that I had seen a few times before, but it managed to get me every time. Knowing that the two most important people in my life got along so well was extremely fulfilling.
My mom must have heard me and she glanced over her shoulder. "What are you doing in here? I thought we kicked you out."
"Ha-ha," my tone was sarcastic as I approached my mom's left side, seeing that she was drying the dishes while Natalie washed. "Why don't you go relax? You've been at it all day."
She shook her head. "Don't be silly, it's-"
"Mom," I groaned, wishing she would just let me help out. Besides, I kind of missed Natalie even though it had only been about an hour since I last talked to her. That was how it was. It was hard for me to be away from her because I never wanted to miss another moment with her again. I had already missed enough.
