Hannes liked to think he was one of the best grandparents left inside the walls, he knew he'll never be as good as Armin grandpa was nor would he be as good as Eren grandma was, bless their souls. But, he thought he was doing rather well as being a grandpa towards his first and only (for now) grandchild.
His granddaughter, Isabel Carla Ackerman.
She was just six years old and she was a pretty little angel with demon blood running through her veins at the same time.
She was a splitting image of her mother, the same face outline, the same beauty and the same silky midnight black hair. But her eyes were more grey like her father instead of raven like her mother. She also didn't have any scars and he saw that a plus side.
Hannes found some pride in being the granddad towards his granddaughter, he wished that both the happily married Ackermans parents could have had the chance to meet such a wonderful daughter but sadly, the world wasn't always that nice to those who deserved a bit of a break.
So, he made it his duty to make his granddaughter as happy as he could and look out for her when her parents were busy.
He did brag about his granddaughter to everyone and anyone, why not, he was proud over her. She was such a blessing and every other man and women in these walls should be jealous over how great she was.
But he also knew when to keep his mouth shut and to never announce her last name because he knew that when she was given life, her parents weren't really allowed to be together due to rank and duty.
After all, they were still facing titans and Eldians as well now .. it wasn't an easy life being an Ackerman it seemed but Hannes didn't mind, he knew the two would always return to the ones they loved.
He had to help clean up one of the bodies that tried killing one of them in the past ... it wasn't a very clean kill, rage was clearly used towards the poor soul. But at least no Ackerman died that night and that was the important thing.
Armin might still throw up whenever he's offered a watermelon but that's just an after effect that he can overcome but just not looking at watermelons anymore.
Now, while Hannes has always been a great grandfather towards his granddaughter and well behaved towards his niece and her husband, today he'll be breaking the rules.
It was the anniversary of his wife death, each year he's taken a bottle of wine and visit the river that carried along the boats and ran from wall Sina to wall Maria, tipping a glass of wine into it for his wife soul to drink up since she wasn't given a funeral when wall Maria was taken over. Sure, her body was burned in a group burning once they got the wall back but he had gotten use to spending each death anniversary by the river, sharing wine with her and telling her over his life in the past year. He'd wake up all sour by morning beside the river but he didn't mind so much after so many years of doing it.
He knew Mikasa would never forgot on purpose and always gave him the night free, even Levi always made sure to get the day off or just the evening off if Mikasa couldn't. The two had treated Hannes like he was their real uncle and it was heart warming for the old man.
