Long ago, lived an old man before he became old.

He had married by an arranged marriage, never once loving his wife and never having her love him in return. But they had learnt to live together, to find happiness with each other even if no love was held between them.

They had a daughter, one who took after her mother mostly and both brought her up as well as they could. Even as the man wife had passed away when his daughter was only fifteen. He might not have loved his wife but he cherished her and losing her made him feel ever so alone.

But he stayed brave, tried bringing up their daughter like his wife had wished for her to brought up and he did his best to keep his daughter happy. But unlike his wife, he was unsure how to bond with his daughter and make the world seem prettier then it was.

So, as his daughter had passed the matchmaker, he praised her and told her how proud he and his would was. When marriage talks came, he would speak with his daughter and see what man she had preferred to have as her husband. He might not have been the most graceful father but he at least wanted his daughter to be happy.

So, he accepted the man she seemed to like the most and get along well with. He stood proud on his daughter wedding day and watched as she left with her husband, staring the next chapter of her life without him.

He was a little upset when she never once sent a letter to him or even came to visit him after the wedding. A wedding his own savings paid for as it was costumed for the father of the bride to pay for the wedding itself.

He knew he might not have been the best father, the one she'd wish for but he was always there for and did his best to keep her happy. His wife had always assumed him that he was doing a decent job and that one day, their daughter would see how much of a good father he was.

But, his daughter never once came to see him and he no longer if she was even still alive anymore or where she even lived. He was meant to visit her new home with her husband when they first moved away .. but he never received the letter over their new address.

He still bought small gifts or cards every year on his daughter birthday, waiting to pass them over for when she came. But after so many years, he knew she wouldn't be returning.

And, every Monday, he'd drink half a pint at the pub in town.

He was a regular but not enough for other's to see him as a drunk as he only came for half a pint once a drink. He got along with a waitress, Carla, speaking with her as he drank and made sure the other customers showed respect and kindness towards her whenever he was about.

He acted like a true father to Carla who was an orphanage and mostly grew up cleaning the whore house as a child before working as a waitress once becoming of age to marry and decided not to sell her own body for business.

She'd always chat with the aging man during his visit and tell him about what's happened in the days he doesn't come to drink. And well, her kindness had saved his lonely self.

He stayed protecting her, making sure everyone knew that she was off-limits unless they meant serious marriage and if they did, he'd be there see. Carla always laughing over his protective he was but knew she was saved by man wrong doings thanks to him.
